Mission Statement

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha (RMHC) is to create and operate programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children. RMHC strives to do so by providing opportunities that strengthen children and families during their most difficult and challenging times. The specific purpose of RMHC is to support access to care, reduce financial burden, provide psychosocial support keeping families together, enhance clinical experiences and outcomes, and help families resume normalcy.

About This Cause

RMHC serves families with children, in utero up to age 21, who need medical care not offered in their communities. Families living at least 35 miles away are eligible to stay at RMHC and participate in all programming that seeks to care for the entire family while the child is treated in the hospital. In addition to the basic comforts of home, including a warm bed, hot shower, laundry facilities, transportation to and from the hospital, and regular nutritious meals, RMHC coordinates activities relative to whole-person care, leveraging multiple non-profit and for-profit partnerships, providing families with wrap-around services to support the mental and physical health of each individual residing there. The cost to provide these services is approximately $120 per family, per day, but thanks to a generous community of supporters, no family is ever turned away due to an inability to make the suggested $25 nightly donation. RMHC can host up to 40 families every night, and in 2023, RMHC served 1,236 individuals, which was more than the number of individuals served in 2021 and 2022 combined (1,197). These individuals came from a total of 394 families, with a nearly 50/50 split between male and female patients, though nearly 90 percent of the caregivers were female. Roughly 61 percent of families came from Nebraska and Iowa and the average patient age was seven. RMHC has also recently taken steps to make an even bigger impact on this community. During a discovery process in 2021, RMHC learned that 80% of health outcomes for a population can be traced back to the social determinants of health (SDOH), including the conditions within the places where people live, learn, work, and play (CareJourney, 2020). In response, RMHC created additional infrastructure to encourage resiliency, self-regulation, and improve overall mental health for families. This is the impetus motivating the creation of a micro-community mindset, and 0.25-mile interactive trail surrounding the RMHC property, to positively influence SDOH’s for RMHC families, as well as the Omaha community at-large. Specifically, this micro-community mindset – executed in the newest addition of 2,900 square feet called the Tree House – includes an infusion center operated by Option Care Health, an indoor play area, refrigerator stocked with healthy snacks, fitness room, and a family day program where local residents with sick children receiving treatment nearby can have a quiet place for the day, away from the medical space. This will allow families to recharge, grab a bite to eat, or even rest during a long day of treatment. Most elements of the project opened in August 2023, while the Day Program opened in April 2024.
