Mission Statement

Our mission is to empower Silicon Valley students, regardless of their race or socioeconomic status, to reach their full potential to become professional and community leaders by teaching critical thinking and communication skills through speech and debate programming.

About This Cause

SVUDL helps students uncover and hone the power of their voices, so they can confidently step into their full potential as professional and community leaders. In SVUDL programs, students build essential skills, then learn practical ways to put them in use in every area of their lives. Students rise to the challenge of researching, analyzing, and solving complex problems. They become more disciplined in their work habits. This leads to better grades and a higher likelihood that they'll stay in school. They not only graduate from high school, but are much more likely to continue on to become college graduates as well. Plus, SVUDL students have a higher chance of winning scholarships and landing internships. In the 2023-2024 school year, SVUDL reached over 2,300 students via its 3 programs: afterschool Speech and Debate teams; two yearlong, state-approved electives; and working with over 100 teachers to implement a Debate Centered Instruction approach in their classrooms. Studies conducted by an independent researcher during that school year found: *Participation in SVUDL programming was correlated with higher GPAs for participating students when compared to their non-participating peers. *SVUDL students reported notable improvements in argumentation, problem-solving, and executive functioning. *Each hour of participation in one of SVUDL’s programs was associated with greater self-reported cognitive engagement and resilience by students.
