Mission Statement
At California Family Institute (CFI), we are driven by a bold mission: to make mental health care accessible to everyone, regardless of financial barriers, while shaping the next generation of compassionate and skilled mental health professionals. Nearly half of those seeking mental health services in our community face insurmountable obstacles to care. CFI bridges this gap through an income-based sliding scale, ensuring that anyone who walks through our doors receives the support they deserve—regardless of their ability to pay. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, CFI provides affordable counseling to individuals, couples, and families while offering research-driven training for mental health professionals. Founded by Dr. Chris Hoff, our work addresses the critical disparities in mental health care access, the rise in loneliness, and the alarming rates of depression and despair in our community. Our mission centers on two transformative goals: 1. Expanding access to mental and relational health services across Orange County and beyond. 2. Training future mental health leaders to reduce disparities and build a more equitable system of care. Rooted in narrative therapy and collaborative approaches, our team works to address a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, substance misuse, life transitions, and relational challenges. We embrace the complexities of people’s lives, recognizing the influence of family, social contexts, and cultural backgrounds on mental health. With a diverse and highly trained team of clinicians, we are committed to creating a supportive, inclusive, and relational environment where individuals and families can find hope and healing. Together, we are reimagining mental health care—one story, one family, and one community at a time.
About This Cause
California Family Institute (CFI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to ensuring everyone has access to quality mental health services, regardless of financial means. Nearly half of individuals seeking mental health care in our community face insurmountable barriers, leaving their needs unmet. CFI exists to eliminate these barriers and provide compassionate, effective support for individuals, couples, and families. Our income-based sliding scale allows clients to pay between $0 and $90 per session, ensuring that cost is never a barrier to care. Whether addressing anxiety, depression, life transitions, substance misuse, or relational challenges, we promise to help every person who seeks our services. Founded by Dr. Chris Hoff over a decade ago, CFI emerged in response to a mental health crisis marked by disparities in access, loneliness, rising rates of depression, and deaths of despair. Guided by the mission to expand access to care and train future mental health leaders, CFI provides affordable counseling and equips practitioners with the skills and heart to serve diverse communities. Rooted in narrative therapy and collaborative methodologies, our therapists take a holistic approach, addressing the influence of family, social contexts, and cultural dynamics on mental health. With consent, we engage family members, physicians, school staff, clergy, and others in the client’s support system to create a comprehensive, relational approach to care. CFI's diverse team includes Clinical Faculty, Masters- and Doctoral-level trainees, and licensed supervisors. Together, they provide low-cost counseling and bring a wealth of experience from various settings, including mental health agencies, crisis centers, and community outreach programs. At CFI, we believe in the power of community, equity, and relational health. We are more than a clinic—we are a movement to reimagine mental health care and ensure no one is left behind.
