About This Cause

SEA Literacy is a nonprofit organization based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, dedicated to helping refugee children and young adults build brighter futures. We support students ages 6 to 24 who have arrived in the United States from countries around the world, many of whom come with limited English skills and significant gaps in formal education. Our mission is to provide them with the literacy tools, academic support, and social-emotional confidence they need to succeed in school and in life. At SEA Literacy, we offer comprehensive, individualized support that meets students where they are. Our programming includes: Literacy development and English language learning Homework help, tutoring, and academic coaching Mentoring and positive youth development STEM activities and hands-on learning experiences Social-emotional learning and confidence-building activities Vocational and life-skills support for older youth Cultural education and community integration Our staff and volunteers work closely with each student to build foundational skills, reading, writing, speaking, problem-solving, and to encourage resilience, leadership, and a sense of belonging. Many of our students arrive in Milwaukee with little understanding of the American school system; we serve as a bridge, helping them navigate classes, expectations, and new cultural norms. In addition to academic support, SEA Literacy places a strong emphasis on connection and community. We regularly host field trips, service projects, group activities, and other experiences that foster friendships, encourage English speaking, and help students feel at home in their new environment. SEA Literacy operates two days per week during the school year and expands to at least two sessions per week in the summer, ensuring consistent, year-round support. All of our programming is free to families, made possible through donations and the dedication of volunteers. By supporting SEA Literacy, donors and volunteers make a direct, lasting impact on some of Milwaukee’s most vulnerable youth. Your generosity helps refugee students build confidence, succeed academically, form meaningful relationships, and pursue fulfilling futures. Together, we can ensure that every student who walks through our doors is empowered, encouraged, and given the opportunity to thrive.
