Mission Statement

It Takes a Village (ITAV) is a women-led nonprofit dedicated to being the "village" every family deserves. What began with one mother supporting her neighbor has grown into a unique, well-regarded model, that is the only one of its kind in New England. Since 2009, ITAV has supported vulnerable families, reduced the risk of postpartum emotional complications, and created economic opportunities to help families transition from crisis to stability.

About This Cause

We are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children and their families by reducing barriers to necessities and community support. Our free programs include: - A comprehensive, community-based basic needs and support center - the largest family basic needs center in Western Massachusetts - One of only a few registered diaper banks in Massachusetts, where nearly 50% of families struggle to afford them - Postpartum home visits for isolated families with babies - School-based, basic needs free store in a Title 1 school district - Caregiver support groups and parenting-skills workshops - Pre-K child enrichment classes to build children’s social-emotional skills - Workforce training programs to improve upward economic mobility for at-risk youth and individuals with disabilities Over the past decade, ITAV has distributed $2.6 million in essential supplies and delivered critical services to nearly 24,000 people. This impact has been made possible by a small but dedicated staff, 25 volunteers, and an operating budget stretched to maximize every dollar. Who We Serve Our diverse families embody resilience in the face of significant challenges. While 74% are classified as low or very low income and 40% identify as BIPOC, each family’s story is unique. Among those we serve are: Survivors of domestic violence rebuilding their lives Postpartum mothers experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders Recent immigrants and refugees from Haiti, Ukraine, Syria, and Afghanistan Families in recovery seeking fresh starts Teen mothers pursuing education while parenting Working families struggling with childcare and basic needs Beyond addressing immediate needs, ITAV builds lasting connections by linking families to a robust network of community resources. We provide referrals to agencies specializing in housing support, food access, healthcare, workforce training, domestic violence advocates and educational programs. Our vision is to expand resources and community connections for underserved families, ensuring they have the necessary support for health, safety, and well-being.
