Mission Statement

Family Biz Builder (FBB) stands as a beacon of hope and progress within Mississippi's Tunica, Coahoma, and Desoto counties. Established in October 2014 by Peggie A. Henderson, a Tunica County native and esteemed business leader, FBB has dedicated itself to fostering significant educational and developmental opportunities for low-income, at-risk youth and families. This 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Nonprofit Organization is headquartered at 1221 Bonds Rd., Tunica, MS 38676, firmly rooting itself within the community it strives to uplift. FBB's mission, "to empower and uplift communities by equipping youth, families, and businesses with comprehensive education, fostering strong character and life skills, and delivering valuable training opportunities," encapsulates the organization's holistic approach to community development. Over the past decade, FBB has evolved into a pivotal force for educational reform and youth development, staying true to its founding principles while adapting to the emerging needs of the community it serves. The genesis of FBB was driven by Henderson's intimate understanding of the local educational challenges, deeply influenced by her own experiences in a one-room schoolhouse that relied heavily on rote learning. This method prioritized memorization over true understanding. Witnessing the persisting drawbacks of such outdated educational techniques, especially in reading comprehension, Henderson was propelled by a desire to enact change. Her vision was clear: to transcend the limitations of traditional schooling and introduce comprehensive educational reforms that would empower the community's youth and families.

About This Cause

Empowerment through Education and Development Our comprehensive program's overarching goal is to significantly enhance the lives of at-risk youth and their families across Tunica, Coahoma, and DeSoto Counties by addressing gaps in literacy, character, and life skills. Recognizing parents' critical role in child development, we emphasize providing them with the necessary tools and knowledge to foster a conducive learning and growth environment at home. By adopting a hybrid approach combining online and in-person educational support with character and life skills training, we aim to develop a sustainable empowerment model applicable across similarly affected communities. Objectives: Literacy and Academic Enhancement: To enhance literacy rates and academic performance among at-risk youth by 25% within the first two years through targeted interventions, including our College & Career Readiness Program. This will entail offering structured academic support, SAT/ACT preparation, and career exploration workshops online and in person through our Community Training Center, tailored to meet diverse participant needs. Character and Life Skills Development: To instill and enhance critical life and social skills, such as resilience, teamwork, leadership, financial literacy, and effective communication. This will be achieved through integrated character-building activities within the Sports & Fitness NJTL Program and interactive life skills seminars, aiming for a measurable improvement in participants' personal development and social engagement. Parental Engagement and Empowerment: Increase parental involvement in children's education and personal development by 30%. Our Parent Empowerment Program will support this goal, offering online resources and in-person workshops to provide parents with practical parenting, literacy promotion, and financial management tools, fostering a supportive home environment. Physical Health and Well-being: Promote tennis training, physical fitness, and healthy lifestyles among participants and their families through the in-person Sports & Fitness NJTL Program to engage at least 70% of participants in regular physical activities. This will also serve as a platform for teaching discipline, teamwork, and a healthy lifestyle. Program Design Elements Hybrid Educational Workshops: Leveraging our online Community Training Center alongside in-person sessions, the College & Career Readiness Program acts as a foundation for academic support. Workshops will employ interactive teaching methods and incorporate technology to actively engage students and parents, catering to varied learning preferences and schedules. Character Development Through Sports: Utilizing the Sports & Fitness NJTL Program, we plan to organize structured sports activities to promote physical health and character building. Participating in sports like tennis will teach youth about perseverance, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a constructive environment, blending in-person engagement with online support materials and activities. Empowering Parents for Success: Central to our initiative, the Parent Empowerment Program will offer online resources and in-person workshops. These resources aim to strengthen parental skills in education, financial literacy, and personal development, providing strategies and confidence for parents to support their children’s growth and become proactive community members. Supportive Services for Holistic Development: Acknowledging our target population's multifaceted needs, our program design integrates various supportive services. These include mentorship opportunities, counseling, and access to health and wellness resources, available both online and in-person, addressing the social and emotional well-being of participants and ensuring comprehensive support to overcome challenges and achieve their full potential. Implementation Strategy This hybrid comprehensive program's success relies on a collaborative implementation strategy, engaging local schools, community organizations, and businesses as digital and physical partners. By pooling resources and expertise, we aim to offer a robust support system that comprehensively addresses the educational, emotional, and physical needs of at-risk families. Regular assessments and feedback mechanisms, facilitated through our online platform and in-person interactions, will monitor progress and adapt the program to meet evolving needs, ensuring our initiatives remain impactful and relevant. Through this integrated approach, combining the College & Career Readiness Program, Sports & Fitness NJTL Program, and Parent Empowerment Program with targeted strategies for literacy and life skills development, we strive to foster a community of empowered individuals and families, ready to embrace the future with confidence and resilience, leveraging the strengths of both online and in-person engagements.
