About This Cause
Thrive is an affirming, LGBTQ-positive environment where residents experience support and belonging as they take steps to exit homelessness. This begins with the basic necessities such as ID recovery and access to services addressing mental, emotional, and physical health. Since 2015, Thrive Youth Center of San Antonio has been a safe, supportive, and encouraging space for all LGBTQ+ young adults experiencing homelessness. Thrive is a place where youth can be their true selves, a place where they can THRIVE! LOCATION & SERVICES Located on the campus of Haven for Hope in San Antonio, Texas, Thrive provides 24 hour residential services, life skills programing, and support to homeless LGBTQ young adults. POPULATION SERVED: Young adults ages 18-24 NUMBER OF EMERGENCY SHELTERBEDS: 13 HUD SUPPORTED HOUSING PROGRAM: 45 apartments NUMBER OF YOUNG ADULTS SERVED IN 2020: 243 (including direct street outreach contacts) OVERARCHING GOAL Residents completing the Thrive program will be self-sufficient and prepared to secure and maintain stable housing. OBJECTIVES Each Thrive resident receives strengths-based support from program staff, including an individualized case management plan that meets the resident’s specific needs and goals. The program utilizes tested approaches and best practices to provide residents with the tools necessary to break the cycle of homelessness and succeed in the workforce as LGBTQ individuals. CASE MANAGEMENT Identifying and pursuing individual needs and goals Pursuing educational goals Obtaining and maintaining employment; and making progress towards career goals Establishing and maintaining good physical, mental, and emotional health Accessing substance abuse recovery programs Becoming financially literate Exploring self-identified hobbies and interests Developing and utilizing healthy communication and social skills SPECIFIC SERVICES Emergency shelter - Access to safe living quarters, meals, showers, laundry facilities, hygiene supplies, and other basic living needs Case management - Strengths-based support, including an individualized case management plan that meets the resident’s specific needs and goals Education services - Access to an onsite GED program, educational classes, and support in accessing educational opportunities. A partnership with Workforce Solutions Alamo connects our young adults to vocational trade programs for in-demand occupations. Employment resources - Case manager assists in resume development, job searching, and connections to other local agencies if needed Stable housing – Assistance with family reunification when appropriate, private housing, transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, public housing, and other options Mental health services - Coordination for LGBTQ specific counseling services onsite, including weekly group and individual sessions Transportation – Assistance with transportation Substance abuse treatment - Access to substance abuse treatment Legal services - Assistance recovering documents or changing name and gender markers Medical care - Access to HIV testing, nurse practitioners, LGBTQ-specific medical services Aftercare - Support and coaching 18 months after residents leave Thrive Visit us online at: www.thriveyouthcenter.com
