Mission Statement
Mission: To provide education and support research that will facilitate the development of sustainable ornamental fish aquaculture in the Peruvian Amazon resulting in sound conservation practices and improved economic development for the local fisherman. Vision: To become a world-class research center. Values: Academic rigor, care and respect for cultural/biodiversity and accountability are essential to achieve the following goals: 1) Promote and provide environmental education at all levels 2) Support research that is focused on the sustainable breeding, conservation and ecology of ornamental fishes of the Peruvian Amazon. 3) Provide education and hands-on training to local fishermen on how to establish and maintain breeding ponds for ornamental fishes.
About This Cause
The Amazon Research Center for Ornamental Fishes (ARCOF) is a nonprofit organization that has been working actively for 7 years to advance conservation, education, research, and associated infrastructure with the indigenous fishers in the Peruvian Amazon. In 2019, we realized the need for greater educational offerings and enhanced collaboration between scientists and the local community. Thus, we began a critical initiative to develop the first public aquarium in this part of Peru. The Aquarium of the Amazon were established to promote conservation awareness and sustainable breeding practices in the communities of Iquitos, Peru, situated deep within the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. The Aquarium opened on January 29, 2024. Our aquarium acts as an educational center, informing visitors—particularly children and school groups—about the rich aquatic life of the Amazon and the significance of conservation. Your support enables us to conduct essential research and educate local fishers on sustainable ornamental fish aquaculture, thereby safeguarding the Amazon’s fragile ecosystem for future generations. Volunteers and interns are offered the opportunity to work in the Aquarium and or assist with ongoing research.
