About This Cause
Established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization in 2015, the Honolulu Biennial Foundation debuted the inaugural Honolulu Biennial in 2017 as a dedicated contemporary art platform in Hawai‘i. Following the successful biennials presented in 2017 and 2019, the internationally recognized events respectively welcomed over 100,000 guests from Hawai’i, Pacific region, as well as visitors from around the world. In 2020, the organization announced the transformation of its signature event into a triennial format and was renamed Hawai’i Contemporary. Looking to the future, Hawai‘i Contemporary continues to build upon this foundation to create inspirational and sustainable exchanges. Hawai‘i Contemporary is exceptionally proud to feature artists and guest curators of Hawai’i, as well as individuals of other ethnic and cultural backgrounds. A multi-faceted approach enables our initiatives to attract diverse participants and audiences. We aim to create an open exchange between community stakeholders and to center artists and creatives at the core of all our programming. Hawai’i Contemporary is committed to fostering a thriving visual arts and educational ecosystem that inspires current and future generations. Through our public programs, Hawai’i Contemporary Art Summit, and the Hawai‘i Triennial, we work in partnership with museums, schools and universities, cultural institutions and locally run initiatives.
