Mission Statement
Team 4944 - The Hi Fives is a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team based in Grand Junction, Colorado. It is independent of School District 51, drawing some of the best and brightest students from ALL Grand Valley High Schools; both public and private, as well as home-schooled students. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an international program that provides a hands-on, intensive mentoring environment for young adults, partnering motivated high school students with professionals from the local community. During the four-month competition season, FIRST teams design, fabricate and drive a 120-lb purpose-built robot in highly challenging and competitive sports-like regional events. The remainder of the year, The Hi Fives team members give back to the community through year-round volunteerism, mentoring elementary and middle school students in FIRST Lego League Jr. FIRST Lego League, and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) competitions along with promoting STEM Education.
About This Cause
Education comes in many forms; sometimes books, sometimes lectures and for others, sometimes hands-on training. Through the Hi Fives team and their program, students have the opportunity to learn many different aspects through their experience outside of a classroom setting. Some of the learning that is and can be achieved is as follows: Team members are introduced to learning the aspects of a non-profit organization that entails accountability, accounting, responsibility and designation of team members in different roles. The Hi Fives Team is dedicated to mentoring programs within the local community in sharing their knowledge, experience and time with younger programs with the FIRST program. To be a part of the team, each member is required to make a commitment, not only to the robotics competition program, but also to mentoring programs, sharing / demonstrating / educating the local community members of all ages. 1.) Our team strives to create different education aspects / theory sessions to reflect the affect that robotics does & will have in regard to saving lives and in furthering education, health advancements and in collaborating the opportunities that could be available through the advancement of science, engineering and robotic technology. 2.) Many of the team members of The Hi Fives team are not “naturally” outgoing in the community or school system. However, through our program, team commitments, community commitments and working together in the program. we have seen so many students become self-confident, strong, outgoing, extroverted and proud of not only what they have accomplished but also of the relationships they have developed within the team and with the mentors, in being mentors and within the community as they have increased their involvement at community functions, both publicly and privately. One of the yearly commitments the team has made is sharing their accomplishments / custom built robotics with a number of assisted living centers within our community. Not only does this activity continue to grow the students self-esteem and presentation skills, but it also touches the lives of the elderly that have had the privilege of seeing their private demonstrations and has become a yearly event that they look forward to. 3.) Building a robotic for the Hi Fives team is not primarily a scientific experiment. Inadvertently, the students are able to build their own culture through this program and positively affect one another. They also have the positive affect on their mentors as they work with them throughout the years and watch them grow; personally, scholastically and professionally. There is an “art” to creating a robotic design through the original creation process, creating teams, team building and organization to make everything work to the best of their ability. All of this, in itself, creates a heritage and foundation for each of these students in which our team has seen this program grow in five years from students of five rival schools throughout our valley to currently nine students. This program has crossed culture lines, school rivalry and positively affected the students, mentors, teachers, parents, the community and sponsors. 4.) All sports have a point in which they begin. Most times, they do not have an absolute idea of how it will affect the participants or the community surrounding them. Yet, you have to begin somewhere. This program, in itself, has shown that it is possible to “cross the line” and build something much more than the individual itself. If one is to talk with the students, watch their interaction and see what they can accomplished, not only as a person, but as something more in being part of a team… it would be easy to see that the assets received by each student as a participant creates a larger advancement to our society as a whole. This program is reaching students that are not easily recognized for large outside of their teachers / parents. However, as each competition progresses, each year progresses, each student progresses and the technology coupled with the lessons, culture, personal growth and teamwork grows… the advancement of this amateur sport grows, one can easily see the positive results and aspects from this program. 5.) Each student, is first and foremost, an individual. However, through this program, students learn directly and indirectly the importance of creating, planning, organizing, scheduling, conflict resolution and recognizing the assets of one another for the greater good of the team. The Hi Fives has not only a commitment requirement by the students, but also by their parents. Working together to make the team and their project as successful as possible is a key ingredient for the success of this team. Last year, Hi Fives was awarded the Chairman’s Award, which is ONLY given to 1 team annually, based on their community involvements, strength, mentoring and what they have achieved during their season commitment. 6.) The students of Hi Fives has a desire, mission and passion for environmental protection and improvement. This, is a secondary purpose for the reason why they are part of this team and why they continue to be a part of the Hi Fives. They see their future and want to make a positive difference, to change lives, to make the world a better place as they grow older. 7.) Our team does not discriminate for any reason and we strive to make sure that “no student is left behind” for any reason. The Hi Fives has added to their program by learning the process of fundraising for their team to instill and make sure that all the students will be able to participate and will not be prevented due to financial hardship, disabilities or any other disadvantage. By doing so, we have seen the strength of the team in leadership, teamwork, reaching out to the community, growing in this process of how to relate to others in the professional industries and in supporting one another in the process.
