Mission Statement

Our mission is to make hands-on food education accessible everywhere children gather to learn so that kids have the knowledge and confidence to make healthy food choices for life.

About This Cause

Cooking is a fundamental life skill that many communities across the country are sorely lacking. Today, 1 in 6 children in the US are food insecure; and 1 in 3 will develop Type 2 Diabetes. These twin epidemics cannot be solved through medical interventions alone. Food education is critical to health: children and their families cannot take advantage of access to healthy foods if they don't have the knowledge and skills to prepare them. Food education gets to the heart of our most pressing issues; health, climate, and economy, all are intrinsically linked to our food system. For the next generation to make choices that support their health and the planet, we must provide basic education about food and its connections to the world we live in. The Charlie Cart Project offers an affordable and comprehensive food education program that works for any learning environment. We bring the kitchen to the kids - each site in our network receives a Charlie Cart, a compact mobile kitchen on wheels, ongoing training, and support for educators, a curriculum that aligns with common core standards, and classroom-tested recipes. The Charlie Cart Project spans 600 sites -- including schools, libraries, food banks, children's museums and hospitals --in 47 states. Since 2014, we have welcomed over 2,000 educators into the Charlie Cart network and together, we have reached more than 550,000 children and their families with critical food knowledge and skills empowering them to make healthy choices. In partnership with the White House Challenge to End Hunger we're poised to reach 1 million children by 2030 - and support from kind donors will help us get there. Together, we will make hands-on food education embedded everywhere children gather to learn, creating a foundation for a healthy generation and shifting the food system from the ground up.
