Mission Statement
Clean water and so much more! Water Underground selects the most vulnerable rural villages in Africa and provides access to clean water, sanitation, agricultural development and community education, thereby empowering entire schools and communities to lift themselves out of poverty in a sustainable and dignified way.
About This Cause
663 million people lack access to clean water and 2.3 billion people lack access to improved sanitation. The water and sanitation crisis is a women's crisis. Millions of women in rural Mozambique lack education beyond 12 years of age due to the lack of private and hygienic facilities for personal hygiene and due to fetching water 6-8 hours every day. The cycle of disease, inequality and poverty can only be stopped by getting to the root causes of poverty, one community at a time. Water Underground is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization based in the USA providing access to clean water, sanitation, agriculture and education to the most impoverished rural schools and communities in Mozambique, Africa. We recognize that providing access to clean water alone is not enough and that by educating and empowering the local people (especially women and children) in how to improve their own lives, true sustainable change and development can take place. Water Underground surveys and selects a vulnerable and motivated community in Mozambique, installs a clean water well, a school sanitation center (including girls private hygiene room and student hand-wash station), a school/community garden for nutrition knowledge and income generation (including innovative bucket-drip irrigation) and provides 2-months training in-depth training with a community group called the 'Water Oversight Committee' in 4 key areas: Water well maintenance and repair, hygiene and sanitation, agriculture and nutrition and sustainability. Our goal is to see communities become completely independent rather than continuing a reliance on foreign aid. Our dedicated team undertakes regular monitoring and evaluation of our communities many years after our project is complete, to measure our impact and ensure our projects are succeeding.
