Mission Statement
The INN Between is Utah’s only medical housing program for terminally ill and medically frail adults experiencing homelessness, meeting a critical need in homeless services. Our mission is to end the tragic history of vulnerable people dying on the streets of our community by providing a safe and supportive haven for those who have nowhere to live during a medical crisis. Striving for zero deaths on the streets, our primary purpose is to ensure that homeless individuals can experience the end of life housed, not homeless, surrounded by people who not only care for them but also care about them. Our secondary purpose is to provide housing stability for people who need to convalesce or gain access to life-saving interventions such as cancer treatment, with supports to help break their cycle of homelessness.
About This Cause
The INN Between provides End-of-Life Care and Medical Respite (defined as short-term medical housing for people who are too sick to be on the streets or in shelters, but not sick enough to be in the hospital). According to the widely held Social Determinants of Health, housing is a component of healthcare. The INN Between supports the Social Determinants of Health in our area by providing the only medical housing safety net for the poor and afflicted. Our program gives people a sense of security and belonging by providing comprehensive social, emotional, and spiritual support in addition to the basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, bedding, and toiletries. End of Life Program: Facing one’s mortality is terrifying for anyone—even more so for someone in housing crisis. Caring for the terminally ill is our top priority as we strive to ensure that everyone, regardless of an adverse past or inability to pay, can experience the end of life with dignity in a safe and caring home with access to professional hospice care (a service that cannot be delivered in shelters, motels, or encampments). Since opening, The INN Between has helped over 100 people through the end-of-life experience. Hospice care is a critical medical service that provides comfort to the patient and support for the family members. Hospice nurses only visit the patient once or twice per week, leaving the family members to provide most of the caregiving. Since most of our clients lack family support, our staff and volunteers step into the role of surrogate family, providing the critical 24/7 support to help clients cope emotionally and perform basic activities of daily living such as grooming, bathing, dressing, toileting, taking medications, and dining. Our end-of-life team and NODA (No One Dies Alone) volunteers provide an added level of support to help people through challenging topics such as making plans for burial or cremation and writing their obituary. They particularly focus on reuniting clients with their family, who are often estranged, so they can make amends before it is too late. After someone dies, we hold a memorial service, post their obituary on our website, and place their name on in our Memorial Garden, all at no charge to the client. Medical Respite Program: The INN Between’ Medical Respite program allows individuals to, among other things, 1) stabilize prior to surgery, 2) become eligible for cancer treatment 3) recuperate from illness, injury, or surgery, 4) gain access to home health care, 5) stabilize uncontrolled diabetes, and 6) receive wound care to prevent infection that can lead to amputation or death. We help our clients apply for mainstream benefits such as Social Security/Disability, Medicaid, and Food Assistance. For those in our recuperative care program, we encourage their progress on the path to self-sufficiency by assisting them with life skills so they can obtain stable housing, employment, and treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, often collaborating with other homeless service providers. The INN Between serves low-and no-income adults who are experiencing homelessness, have severe and/or terminal illness, and have no other safe and stable housing solution.
