Mission Statement
Friends of Kairos works in the United States and Nicaragua, to create common interest communities focused on community development, to foster peace and justice in the Americas. Friends of Kairos is born to contribute to the building of a world of justice and love. By gathering peoples in their local communities, in the community and culture of another, or at the Centro Kairós/Kairos Center in Managua, Nicaragua, we use pedagogies based on participatory education, believing that we are all teachers, all students, all gifted with tools that are necessary for creating a just and loving world. Friends of Kairos is open to people, communities, collectives, institutions, churches and other groups, without making distinctions for reasons of color, economic class, age, ethnic, religious, political or sexual identity—simply stated, the only requirements to participate are desire, openness and commitment to be a part of the process, to dream and build together.
About This Cause
Friends of Kairos is focused on sustainable development. We used community education resources to help a community to create the infrastructure needed for them to thrive on their own, independent of outside resources. The ultimate measure of our success is when the communities we work with achieve the level of maturity that they reach out beyond themselves to assist other communities in a similar fashion. We believe that “we are all in this together”, and we must support and aid each other for our own health and well being. Programs: Friends of Kairos undertakes these initiatives: 1. Sister Communities a. We recruit and train communities in North America and Central America who desire to establish a long term “sister” or hermanamiento relationship with a community from a different culture. b. We assist these communities to organize and create effective administrative structures to achieve their goals. c. We provide training to these communities on the methods of community education, establishing goals, and acquiring resources to achieve their goals. d. We facilitate communications between these sister communities via mail, email, and electronic communications. e. We facilitate delegations or visits between these communities to foster their relationships. 2. Development Initiatives. a. We assist communities in North America and Central America who wish to improve their access to essential services, such as health care, education, transportation infrastructure, water, etc. b. We identify those communities both North and South that wish to participate in these initiatives, who will likely have a successful outcome. Funding: All funding is from individual contributions, and contributions from allied churches and communities in North America that are affiliated with Friends of Kairos Nicaragua and support its work. Funding solicitation is by means of: 1. Annual mailing campaign to parties who have participated in Escuela AKF programs and trips. 2. WebSite donation portal. 3. Personal contact by volunteers on behalf of the organization. Staff The organization has no paid staff. Volunteers All support activities are performed by volunteers, or on a contract basis when particular expertise is required, such as Accounting and Legal services.
