Step Onward Foundation, a 501(c)(3) Texas nonprofit organization, prevents homelessness and housing insecurity. We provide financial assistance for housing, education, food, transportation and counseling to individuals and families facing chronic or sudden hardship.
About This Cause
Step Onward Foundation, a 501(c)(3) Texas nonprofit organization, prevents homelessness and housing insecurity. We provide financial assistance for housing, education, food, transportation and counseling to individuals and families facing chronic or sudden hardship. We serve young adults and families throughout Texas, with the majority being in the Austin area. Individuals and families are referred to Step Onward from a variety of sources, including other nonprofits serving young adults who have experienced homelessness, as well as hospitals serving critically ill children. Because Step Onward Foundation provides financial assistance before someone loses their home, our support is unique and sets us apart from other nonprofits serving the unhoused in our community. The young adults we serve have typically aged out of the foster care system and/or programs with other non-profits and are trying to make it on their own with little or no family support. These individuals have the motivation and dreams of pursuing their high school equivalency or higher education, but need help with housing, tuition, and buying food, books and/or computers. Through collaborating with agency social workers, Step Onward fills a gap in the scope of services offered by the organization and is there to walk alongside these young adults as they pursue their education goals and other forms of career preparation to ensure that they have the financial support, sound guidance, and encouragement needed to achieve their goals. While this is a long term investment and relationship, seeing these young adults through to graduation and contributing to society and their communities where they live and work has immense long term benefits. Family referrals come from social workers at local hospitals, like Dell Children’s Hospital or Texas Children’s Hospital, who are working with families with a critically or terminally ill child. These families have exhausted their financial resources and are now at risk of losing their home. Many are also struggling to feed themselves and their other children. Step Onward steps in to provide critical short-term funding to keep these families housed and fed, so they can focus on what’s most important - their family - without the stress of when they’ll get their next meal or where they’ll sleep that night. In addition to housing and food, we also provide support for utilities, education, transportation and mental health and wellness during their greatest time of need. Funding for families with a critically ill child can be up to 3 months, but is typically 1-2 months, long enough to help them get back on their feet. This is a very small cost compared to the cost to society for these families to be evicted during one of the most difficult times of their lives.
