Mission Statement
Kids in Focus is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to mentoring kids from under-resourced communities to overcome adversity through the art of photography. Having a positive and creative outlet and the guidance and support of an adult mentor can have a profound effect on a child’s resilience, self-confidence, and opportunity. Looking through the lens of a camera can literally help a child reframe their outlook on themselves and their future.
About This Cause
KIF began in 2012 with one 8-week afterschool photography program for 24 kids, 12 volunteer mentors and one community partner. Today, KIF offers several empowering programs for children in Maricopa County including afterschool, camps, workshops and alumni programs. These programs rely on the support of volunteer mentors who provide guidance, support and teaching the kids to reframe their outlook using photography as a means of positive expression. Each KIF program uses the unique art form of photography as the tool to reopen the kids’ eyes to their own potential while building the self-esteem and resilience they need to overcome the challenges they face. Not only are the kids taught creative problem solving, but they also learn to “see”, to notice and to explore with curiosity and wonder. Relationships are formed, and trust is built between the kids and their mentor. The programs culminate with the recognition of the kids’ efforts through photography exhibits and opening night celebrations. The children see their work on display and are recognized and appreciated by others, igniting a feeling of pride and accomplishment. Intensive Mentoring Series- KIF’s flagship program provides middle school aged kids with a weekly intensive program, lasting between 2-9 weeks. Mentored by experienced photographers, they take a journey of discovery through classroom lessons and field trips. One of the innovative and most transformative pieces of this program is the public exhibit and opening night celebration. During this special evening, the kids stand proudly before their photographs interacting with their families and more than 500 people from the community. Each child keeps their camera and receives a hard-bound book of the works on display. True North Photography Day Camps - This innovative program provides fun-filled day excursions for kids and mentors that take the classroom on the road. Each trip includes a full day of exploration, photography, and camaraderie. The kids and mentors have several hours to explore the area and capture it with their cameras. On the bus ride home, the kids and mentors work together to compile their photos into a slideshow to share with those on the bus as well as friends and family. Each trip allows kids to leave their often-stressful lives for a day of adventure, exploration, photography, and skill building. Workshops – Customized one-day Learn & Explore workshops for youth at partner organizations, including Friends of Foster Care and Catholic Charities, where they learn basic photography techniques, creative problem-solving skills, and self-esteem. Camp: Camp KIF immerses kids in nature taking them out of their everyday surroundings and allowing them to explore the outdoors through the lens of a camera. Together with their mentors, they discover nature – and themselves building trust, self-confidence, and resilience. Camp KIF offers one, two and three-day programs at beautiful campgrounds in the mountains of northern Arizona, Cave Creek, and the Phoenix metro area. Grads in Focus- KIF strongly believes in staying connected to kids who have participated in one or more of our programs. The Grads in Focus program provides ongoing opportunities to keep the kids actively involved with KIF and deepen their connection with their mentors. The program features a private online app for sharing photos and chats, team-building field trips each quarter, and opportunities for the kids to serve junior mentors to younger kids. KIF connects with children through community partners that serve children in Maricopa County. Our community partners include Arizona Friends of Foster Children, Boys & Girls Clubs, Children First Leadership Academy, Hope & A Future (foster care org.), Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Sequoia Deaf School, and Stepping Stones of Hope. Exhibits Program – Powerful public exhibits of the kids' photos bring awareness and inspiration to more than 400,000 Arizona residents and visitors each year. Their photos and captions offer the unique perspective of youth from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Knowing that their artwork is valued and appreciated has the power to transform the way these young people view themselves and their potential. Venues included the Arizona Science Center, Arizona State Fair, New City Studio, Phoenix City Hall, Scottsdale Fashion Square, Shemer Art Center, Scottsdale Civic Center and other engaging locations.
