Mission Statement

Providing life-changing skills for incarcerated individuals through culinary, fine arts and life skills training while building self esteem and supporting a vision of a new future.

About This Cause

Recipe for Change provides culinary, fine arts and life skills training to detainees of the Cook County Jail (Chicago, IL) while building self-esteem and the foundation for a new vision of the future. We hope you will view the trailer to the documentary about our program, Serving Time, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObxUYzgbV3g Programming is offered five days per week by Chicago based professional chefs, a nutrition instructor from Le Cordon Bleu, and an accomplished art instructor. Program graduates may participate in an internship program producing pizza for sale to other detainees enabling them to experience the pressures and cooperative environment required in commercial food preparation. Students undergo an interview, submit an essay and must to adhere to a strict level of discipline both within the program and on the cellblock to remain in the twelve week program. Successful students are eligible for sentencing credit (should they be found guilty) and will receive a certificate of completion and industry certification. The program provides a meaningful use of time while awaiting trial and strives to reduce jail-based disciplinary issues and reduce recidivism. Equally as important, our programs are infused with our commitment to nurture change from within thereby creating sustainable change in the individual, their families, and the communities in which they live.
