Mission Statement

The W-Underdogs program is a non profit organization whose mission is primarily to lift up disadvantaged kids by helping rescue animals . We teach kids how to manage, care and train animals and in doing so learn to care for themselves through personal discipline and responsibility and also feel compassion. They learn teamwork and manage expectations. In short, they acquire skills that they are not currently learning within their home environment. We aim to help them see beyond their immediate environment.

About This Cause

The organization, W-Underdogs, Inc. is a non-profit 501 (3) (c) based in southeast Atlanta. The organization rescues, protects and rehabilitates neglected, abused and discarded animals (dogs and cats). The organization recruits volunteers youths from neighborhoods in the southeast Atlanta between the ages of 10- 16 years who otherwise may seek refuge with gangs that now plague this area of the City. The children are 100% African American. W-Underdogs, Inc. currently serves an average of 10-15 at-risk youth per month. The organization seeks financial support from organizations like yours to continue rescuing and housing the animals as we continue and expand serving the kids. The W-Underdogs invites the children after school and after completion of homework to participate in rescue work, by building dog houses, learning training methods, caring and playing responsibly with the dogs. W-Underdogs also engage in weekly and monthly neighborhood projects such as community litter clean ups, planting trees and growing vegetables. The urban everyday realities of the kids in neighborhoods in southeast Atlanta are challenging. Challenges from gangs, crime and substance abuse to poverty and domestic violence, are hampering the youth’s resolve to stay in school and their ability to build better lives for themselves. This program offers hope. With a hands on ”W-Underdogs” approach of supporting rescue animals, the children learn both hard physical skills (such as carpentry, mowing yards and pressure washing driveways) and the soft skills (empathy and responsibility) along with the priceless emotional experience of unconditional love of animals. With continued support we hope to grow this budding program and organization into a powerful agent of change that can help rescue more dogs and serve young kids. Funds can be allocated in two different ways. One to support the general fund of the W-Underdogs organization and two to fund one of the many programs under the W-Underdogs umbrella like the dog house project, animal rescue, after school and community involvement and outreach programs. The operating fund will help allay the day to day operation of keeping the program functioning like the maintenance of space, feeding the kids, buying uniform and school related materials and supplies. The long term plan for W-Underdogs is to find and pay for rental of a larger space for housing the animals, to have a storage facility and space for programs. We also need the funds to create and maintain sustainability beyond 2016 for both the organization and the programs. W-Underdogs have partnered with many other community organizations and continue to seek opportunities to work with other like non profits in Atlanta. The organization has worked with Hands On Atlanta, Trees, Trees Atlanta, Organized Neighbors of Summerhill, Peoplestown Neighborhood Organization, NPU-V, Atlanta Police Department, Fulton/Dekalb Animal services, Spalding County and Rome, Ga
