About This Cause
Haywood Pathways Center (HPC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Waynesville, NC, providing meals, emergency shelter, short-term housing, rehabilitative care, developmental services, and case management services for the homeless and those recently released from incarceration in our county who have nowhere else to go. HPC is the only widely accessible homeless shelter in Haywood County (the REACH shelter only serves recent domestic violence victims). Any county resident who is sober, drug-free, and not a Registered Sex Offender is eligible for our services. We provide our services for all, regardless of religious affiliation. HPC’s mission is: In Christ's name, we provide food, shelter, and individualized supportive services for Haywood County residents. Our vision is a community where all our neighbors have access to safe shelter, nutritious food, and pathways to flourish. In 2023, HPC provided 23,389 nights of shelter and 106,494 meals in addition to serving 295 residents (incl. 33 parents and 56 children) through our rehabilitative program. Of short-term residents, 72% maintained a stable monthly income. Also, 62% of HPC’s individual residents and 73% of families found housing or were reunited with family. Many health issues arise among the homeless population due to inadequate nutrition, exposure to the elements, inaccessibility of treatment for illness and infection, mental illness, cycles of addiction, and more. One crucial element of HPC’s services is meeting the basic needs of food, shelter, and safety for this often-overlooked segment of the population; having these needs met is fundamental for establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In addition to meeting basic needs, HPC offers a short-term rehabilitative/development program, which has longer-term benefits on the health of those we serve by helping to overcome barriers such as mental health issues, trauma, unemployment, or addiction. HPC helps to meet the short-term, fundamental needs of our residents and lay a foundation for strong health as follows: a) Food: 3 meals/day and snacks for all shelter residents; hot to-go dinner meal 7 days/week for anyone in the community; meals at no charge to anyone via our Holy Cow Food Truck 5-7 times/week. b) Shelter: Over 90 beds in 3 separate dormitories (one male dorm, one female dorm, one family dorm) to provide warmth and comfort and lay a foundation for rehabilitation and recovery. Separate lockers with locks are available to store individual belongings. In June 2019, we opened a new dorm specifically for single mothers with children, including a private bedroom for each family, private/semi-private bathrooms for each family, in addition to a communal living space, trauma-informed play area, laundry area, and dining area. In December 2020, we extended the scope of this dorm to include full families (mother and father present) as well as single fathers with children. c) Safety: Clean and sober living environment, 24/7 presence of staff/security, located adjacent to Haywood County Sheriff’s Department and the Haywood County EMS. HPC’s rehabilitative and development services are the other crucial element of our services and help individuals develop new, healthy life skills and overcome long-term barriers to health such as mental health issues, trauma, or addiction. HPC has two full-time Peer Support Specialists onsite who use their own past experience of recovery from mental illness and/or addiction, plus skills learned in formal training, to serve as a source of mental health support, guidance, and recovery to individuals. Residents at HPC meet at least weekly with a Case Manager, who offers goal planning, resource referral, drug/alcohol screening, and additional support for residents to help them get back on track and overcome issues contributing to homelessness. Onsite classes are also available at HPC and include budgeting, renting, employment interviews, health/wellness, healthy relationships, parenting classes, arts/crafts, and Bible study to help residents build new, stronger foundations for their lives. These services together help residents to reach a point of financial and emotional stability which is pivotal to overall health and avoiding homelessness.
