Mission Statement
The Westonka Walleye Program is building a better walleye fishery in Lake Minnetonka, and bringing the pursuit of walleye a little closer to home… WWP’s mission is to sustain and improve the harvestable walleye fishery on Lake Minnetonka. With approval from the MN DNR, and with private donations, WWP is privately stocking 8"- 13" walleye in Lake Minnetonka. These fish are incremental to the DNR's stocking program. In the first 11 years, we have stocked over to 170,000 8"-13"walleye in Lake Minnetonka.
About This Cause
The walleye are biting!!! Fishermen are reporting some of the best walleye fishing they have ever seen on Lake Minnetonka. We believe this is the results of the Westonka Walleye Program. The Westonka Walleye Program is building a better walleye fishery in Lake Minnetonka, and bringing the pursuit of walleye a little closer to home… WWP’s mission is to sustain and improve the harvestable walleye fishery on Lake Minnetonka. With approval from the MN DNR, and with private donations, WWP is privately stocking 8"- 13" walleye in Lake Minnetonka. These fish are incremental to the DNR's stocking program. Lack of natural reproduction is a problem! Lake Minnetonka’s walleye population has very little natural reproduction. The DNR has only stocked Lake Minnetonka on even numbered years for the last 30 years. Most of the walleye in the DNR samplings are born on even numbered years. Therefore, it is estimated that as little as 5% of Lake Minnetonka's walleye come from natural reproduction. Very few lakes in MN are able to naturally sustain walleye populations without stocking efforts. This means, if we want to have a quality walleye fishery in Lake Minnetonka, we need to stock walleye in the lake! The DNR is doing the best they can with their budgets, and the Westonka Walleye Program is the community’s opportunity to help make walleye fishing great in Lake Minnetonka. WWP is stocking larger walleye, (8"-13"). The larger walleye have a higher probability of reaching a harvestable size. By stocking larger size fish we hope to offset the predator factor. It is estimated that 80% of DNR's stocked (2"-6") walleye are consumed by predators, while less than 10% of (8"-13") walleye are consumed by predators. It is a lot more expensive to stock these larger size fish, about $2 per fish, but they will have a lot better chance of surviving. Giving anglers a better chance of catching them…
