Mission Statement

The Utah Ovarian Cancer Alliance (UOCA) is a non-profit organization whose mission is threefold: Promote saving women’s lives by increasing education and awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Promote local and national activities that provide support and networking for the ovarian cancer community, including survivors, families, care providers and supportive individuals. Raise funds for education, awareness, and research in ovarian cancer.

About This Cause

UOCA's mission essentially focuses in three areas. First, we seek to promote saving women's lives by increasing education and awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. Early detection allows for treatment and contribute to higher survival rates. The more the public knows the more likely there is to be early detection. Though ovarian cancer is the eleventh most common cancer among women, it is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women and the deadliest of gynecologic cancers. There is not currently an early detection test for ovarian cancer, which makes it even more deadly, since it often is advanced by the time it is diagnosed. Second, we promote local and national activities (including seminars, symposia, and other events) that provide support and networking for the ovarian cancer community comprising existing patients suffering with ovarian cancer, survivors, families, care providers and others who support such community. We from time to time provide financial assistance to individuals to allow them to attend events that they are not able to afford on their own. Third, we raise funds and make contributions to other organizations engaged in research, education and raising public awareness, whose mission and purposes are aligned with ours. As an example, we have donated funds to the Huntsman Cancer Institute's Wellness & Integrative Health Center, which offers classes and services for people affected by cancer. We provide training to individuals and organizations to allow them to raise public awareness and to advocate for improved patient care and treatment. One of our most visible efforts is in the “Touch of Teal Comfort Bags,” which UOCA assembles. These are provided to oncology nurses and given to newly-diagnosed ovarian cancer patients. In an insulated bag, we include items like socks, blankets, and hand-crocheted hats (to keep warm during chemo), a water bottle, tissues, lip balm, and mints, and a handwritten letter of support from UOCA. It’s always overwhelming to begin cancer treatment and we have heard from patients that they truly appreciate knowing that they are not alone and that UOCA is thinking of them and supporting them in their illness.
