Mission Statement
The Pehli Kiran Schools (PKS) support the JAQ Education Trust in Pakistan which promotes primary education for out-of-school children, especially girls, in lowest income, unserved, urban slum communities, to help them achieve their potential and become productive members of society. PKS also supports PKS alumni and other marginalized community youth to enhance livelihood opportunities.
About This Cause
Our target niche is out-of-school children, living in the most marginalized, vulnerable excluded communities. We take children off the streets and put them in school. Without the PKS, children from these communities would not see the inside of a classroom. With no access to basic education, life skills and other opportunities, these children are more vulnerable to beggary, crime, drugs, and exploitation by extremist groups. PKS is one of the few organizations working for such transient, nomadic communities in Pakistan’s unserved urban slums. The unique features of our PK schools, which sets our model apart, include: - Setting up the school in the community, to ensure student access and retention; - Using mobile infrastructure (prefab steel sheds that can be taken apart and reassembled) - which can move with the community if it is evicted, as these squatter settlements frequently are; - Providing a sound academic base, that uses the Montessori approach, adapted to resource & environmental constraints. - Robust Co-Curricular program that focuses on building character, instilling values, especially peace and tolerance, and encouraging confidence, curiosity, & creativity, through a wide range of fun-filled activities. - Strong Community engagement that helps build trust and ownership of the PKS program. Financed mostly by individual donations, PKS is a network of 11 schools & 4500+ students. Keeping low overheads, at US$5 per child per month (or $60 per child per year), we are one of the lowest cost, quality education providers in Pakistan. In 2018 we upgraded our service by introducing middle school for girls, to prevent dropouts of adolescent girls. We have also launched our Pehli Kiran Livelihoods Program for PKS Alumni and community youth, which includes: (i) scholarship support for continuing education; (ii) vocational training; (iii) business development training and support for micro-enterprise start-ups, and most importantly, counseling and mentoring services. This recognizes the critical need to focus on livelihoods, to help move these youth out of poverty. This year our annual fundraising target is $300,000. We have already raised $100,000. Our balance target is US$200,000.
