Mission Statement
The 1881 Institute - named after the year the Tuskegee Institute was founded - is a workforce development initiative that consists of a set of interventions to meet the needs of out-of-school youth, vulnerable populations in high school, and unemployed young adults. The organization encourages and nurtures renewed growth in advanced manufacturing, while ushering increased participation of underrepresented populations into Industry 4.0 careers regardless of their social, emotional, academic, or disability status.
About This Cause
The organization's interventions include the following: IN-SCHOOL & AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS This is a point of entry for 1881 to identify young talent for the engineering and advanced manufacturing industry through enrichment classes with local charter schools, as well as afterschool programs and summer camps. VOCATIONAL SCHOOL The Vocational School was formed in response to students and parents in 1881's after-school programs who were unsatisfied with their public school option and who wanted to pursue a technical vocation through a homeschool model as an entryway into Industry 4.0 careers and postsecondary education. APPRENTICESHIP This program bridges 16-24 year-olds to engineering and advanced manufacturing careers by providing a design and fabrication work experience while they earn certifications and other industry credentials. This intervention aligns with the Department of Labor’s emphasis on quality pre-apprenticeship and registered apprenticeship opportunities as pathways to family- sustaining wages. INDUSTRY CAPSTONE A convening of 1881's undergraduate participants and companies to tackle real-world, multidisciplinary engineering problems. The program concludes with participants presenting their projects to industry professionals.
