Mission Statement
We lead collective action to disrupt the $2.5 trillion fashion industry. Join us. Remake is a global advocacy organization fighting for fair pay and climate justice in the clothing industry. With free educational resources, documentary shorts to rebuild human connections between the women who buy and create our fashion, viral campaigns and policy reform, we are making fashion a force for good.
About This Cause
Why Remake? Remake is a force for change in the fashion industry, powered by an all-women team and a global network of garment worker leaders, next-gen changemakers and sustainable business, policy and academic leaders. Over the last decade we have created safer jobs of dignity for millions of women in the United States and globally, trained up 2,000 next-gen organizers and helped pass landmark legislation to put women and our planet first. ➔ It’s an overproduction problem: Globally, we produce 100 billion units of garments1 per year. Of that clothing, 6 out of 10 pieces end up burnt or in landfills2 within the first year of production. Ultra-fast fashion brands like Shein and Temu, ship 600,000 packages in the United States every single day hastening the climate and waste crisis3. 5 billion pounds of retail returns end up in landfills every year4. ➔ It’s a human rights issue: Of the 75 million people that power the fashion industry5, 80% are young women6 in their early twenties. Most work in unsafe conditions making less than half of a living wage7. Millions of garment workers, primarily women of color, face poverty pay, unsafe working conditions, and gender based violence, undermining economic justice. ➔ It’s a climate disaster: The fashion industry creates 10% of all GHG emissions8, making it a key player in determining the planet’s future. Up to 8,000 chemicals are found in our clothes today9 and micro-plastics from fashion threaten ocean health. Shared Victories, Building a Better Future Remake's work has yielded significant results, including our viral #PayUp campaign that recovered billions in canceled contracts for garment workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and the historic passage of the Garment Worker Protection Act, a groundbreaking California law that establishes workplace protections. These victories demonstrate the power of collective action and pave the way for a more equitable and sustainable fashion ecosystem.
