Detroit Horse Power expands opportunity for youth in the city of Detroit by teaching them valuable life lessons through riding and caring for horses. We aim to combine this high-impact youth programming with vacant land revitalization by building a new urban riding center that will be home to year-round programming in Detroit.
About This Cause
Detroit Horse Power expands opportunity for youth in the city of Detroit by teaching them valuable life lessons through riding and caring for horses. We aim to combine this high-impact youth programming with vacant land revitalization by building a new urban riding center that will be home to year-round programming in Detroit. We currently bring at-risk youth to existing horse barns outside Detroit for five day summer camps. These programs teach kids how to ride, how to care for horses, and also provide the opportunity to learn from guest speakers from various equine professions. But the most important lessons are what participants learn about themselves: the confidence that comes with riding, responsibility for another living being, perseverance to not give up when things get hard. These are critical skills that set up our youth for success in school and in life. We look forward to opening a permanent base of operations in the city of Detroit where we can contribute to a stronger community by transforming the burden of vacant land into a community asset with a new urban riding center. The facility will be home to year-round youth programming as well as private horse boarding and local equestrian competitions that bring in revenue to increase our financial sustainability as well as foster greater cross-community engagement between Detroit residents and area horse lovers. We are very excited to use the power of horses to build a stronger future for kids, a community, and the city of Detroit.
