Mission Statement
Our mission is to help children living in the Kawangware slums in Nairobi, Kenya to change their futures by providing quality education and teaching life skills that prepare them for successful adult employment, thus ending the cycle of poverty, one child at a time.
About This Cause
Kawangware Kids is a small program that currently supports 40 students who live in the Kawangware slums in Nairobi, Kenya. Our students range in age from 7 to 21, and attend Kenyan schools. Due to their poor home lives and other issues that are the result of poverty, many entered school late and do not have the solid foundation to do well in school. The situation is complicated because the Kenyan educational system is not designed to help students like ours and they are sent to low quality, poor performing schools. Kawangware Kids is providing an educational bridge that will ensure our students do better in school and are prepared for technical schools or university education. All of our Secondary students (high school) attend boarding schools and have about four months of school breaks. During the school breaks, KW Kids provides a tutor who is available four days per week. The tutor assesses our students and then provides the necessary instruction. We have also started using computers to expand the educational resources available to our students. By providing this type of intense instruction we are seeing our students achieve better grades and have had two of our first year secondary students placed in second tier schools. Our goal is to ensure when our secondary students finish secondary school; that they have the grades necessary to be accepted into a technical program or go onto university. Our observations and experience with our secondary students was instrumental in making a major change in our primary education program. Starting in 2018, we moved all our primary students to a private primary school that has a great educational record and takes a personal interest in each students. A costly but necessary step that will provide our students with the foundation they need to do well all through out their school years. The staff at the Kawangware Kids center meets with the primary students weekly and with the school staff monthly. Many our students come from broken homes and all suffer from the effects of poverty. We see the impact often in their approach to life and note a general lack of critical thinking skills. In order to prepare them for life outside the slums and Nairobi's challenging labor field; we work with them to broaden their exposure to life and to teach them better life skills. We maintain a library and via reading we are exposing students to the world around them. When financially possible we take them out to eat, to a movie, to a mall, and other places in and around Nairobi. We do have a few parents who are involved and they are encouraged to meet with the schools, attend school events, and to support their students in a positive way. For those students who do not have secure home lives and/or parents that do not care for them; we provide foster care and/or other types of social support which includes food, clothing and medical care. Though our program is small, we are making a real difference in the lives of our students but know we could do more if we had the funding. We are being asked often to support other students but cannot do so with our current budget. KW Kids would also like to set up a permanent learning center that is staffed full time and which we can use not only for the KW Kids but other students from the slums.
