Mission Statement
The Rushmore Music Festival promotes access to musical excellence through education and performance to enrich the cultural landscape in our community and beyond.
About This Cause
Founded in 2015 by violinist, Dr. Katie Smirnova and violist, Brett Walfish, the Rushmore Music Festival, a 501(c) (3)nonprofit organization, was established to serve a dual purpose: 1) through the Summer Academy, inspire and promote excellence in the next generation of musicians by providing young students nationwide, who are in the crucial stages of their musical development, with an intensive enrichment program that is uniquely structured with the goal of strengthening their skills in communication, and 2) to enrich and elevate the quality of life for the local residents in the Black Hills of South Dakota by bringing the world’s leading performing artists to this musically underserved community to present a summer Faculty Artist Chamber Music Concert Series. The festival’s Summer Academy fills a niche for summer study opportunities available to developing students. There are many programs for beginning students such as Suzuki workshops and orchestra festivals, as well as many festivals geared towards students who are already on the verge of a professional career in music. However, students in the pivotal stage of developing their musical voice, the intermediate/early advanced stage, have limited options in South Dakota and throughout the nation. The Rushmore Music Festival addresses this need by connecting these students with world-class artist teachers in an immersive, holistic environment. In partnership with Black Hills State University, the Faculty Artist Concert Series provides a critical educational resource both to festival students and to the community. With three weekends of faculty concerts, students gain valuable concert-going experience while observing the preparation process. With opportunities to attend classical music concerts of the highest caliber, the festival creates a welcoming atmosphere where audiences of all ages are encouraged to deepen their understanding and appreciation of classical music.
