Mission Statement
The Mustard Seed Catholic Worker Community, a Catholic Worker House of Hospitality committed to the vision espoused in the Catholic Worker Aims an Purposes, offers a regular evening meal as well as a weekly prayer evening on behalf of Worcester's poor. We seek to nurture and promote a culture of concern by clarifying thought and performing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy communally and at personal sacrifice. We believe that in doing so we will relieve some human suffering and that we will be creating a better society, one in which "it is easier for people to be be good". Taking our inspiration from the parable of the mustard seed, we believe that our modest labor , if graced by God, will make for a vast difference in a world in need of change.
About This Cause
The Mustard Seed Catholic Worker Community, Inc. strives to provide a place for people to gather in community. We provide dinner Monday through Friday throughout the year with the exception of Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. We also give out toiletries, clothing and other items such as blankets and sleeping bags as we are able based on donations received. Our meals are mainly provided by religious organizations and a few companies whose employees volunteer and serve the meal. The organizations that provide the meals also bring volunteers from their community to serve the meal and help with other tasks. We welcome volunteers to join us from 3:30 to 6:30 to be in community with our guests and assist with the daily tasks of the Mustard Seed. These tasks include but are not limited to serving snacks and coffee beginning at 3:30, working in the clothing area, cleaning, trash pickup in the neighborhood and on site, general cleaning, serving the dinner and cleaning up after the meal. In addition, volunteers might coordinate bingo or other activities with our guests. We join together to pray on Monday and Friday evenings at 6:30 and occasionally have Mass at 7Pm on Friday. We offer other opportunities to volunteer on Saturdays where we might complete larger projects. We join together to be in community with our fellow human beings and offer respite if only for a few hours.
