Mission Statement
Outside Perspectives cultivates lasting personal growth and positive community engagement by offering a spectrum of transformative outdoor experiences.
About This Cause
Outside perspectives is a non-profit organization that partners with youth development agencies, schools, and teams to provide transformative wilderness experiences for youth. Participants learn to rethink basic assumptions about themselves and their place in the world through challenge, critical thinking, fun, and adaptation. These skills are transferable to school, work, community, and home; creating a new sense of personal responsibility and improved feelings of empowerment and self-control. These experiences help cultivate an environment that naturally supports social-emotional development among youth and fosters a culture where students are excited and motivated to learn and engage in their community; inspiring compassion for each other and deeper more sustainable connections. OP offers everything from dynamic one-day programming such as outdoor rock climbing and canoe excursions, to multi-day backpacking or canoeing expeditions. Expeditions are journey experiences (also known as a “Rites of Passage”) which have a great impact on group cohesion, feelings of belonging, team-building, interpersonal development, confidence, and leadership skills. Industry outcome measures demonstrate that expedition programs create greater resiliency amongst youth dealing with the stresses of life. This includes evidence to show decreased incidents of behaviors that are harmful to self, including substance abuse. (“Wilderness therapy programs are associated with reduced substance abuse and increased levels of readiness to change among youth.” (Norton CL, Tucker A, Russell KC, et al. Adventure therapy with youth. Journal of Experiential Education. 2014;37(1):46-59.)
