Mission Statement
We feed the hungry of Staten Island by providing free groceries and a free lunch every Saturday. We serve several hundred each week. We use only Volunteers and since the space is donated, our only expenses are for food and supplies.
About This Cause
In the early nineteen-eighties a group of people gathered in a local basement to discuss the needs of Project Hospitality. The goal was to make sandwiches for Project Hospitality. PH whose aim was to find housing, food, and other essential services for the homeless of Staten Island. One of the members of this group negotiated the use of a local church with a professional kitchen which would be available to them on Saturdays. This would allow them to make use of the church facilities for a Saturday soup kitchen. In those early days we served a simple soup lunch with Tender Loving Care. So began the Saturday soup kitchen at Feeding with T.L.C., Inc. in Staten Island, New York. Volunteer crews of cooks from different organizations took responsibility for a particular Saturday in the month and provided nutritious, wholesome, and tasty meals to all who come. Groups of volunteers serving the meals came from several sources: civic organizations, high schools, colleges, Boy Scouts, employees of local businesses. This endeavor has continued, every Saturday now for over thirty years, first with Project Hospitality, and now by Feeding with T.L.C., Inc., a not-for-profit corporation. From soup and sandwich lunches for thirty or so people, TLC, Inc. has grown by leaps and bounds and now feeds an average of 93 meals a week, eighteen percent to children. On the last Saturday of August 2015 we served 138 individuals a hearty lunch in a one hour period. Feeding with TLC, Inc. also has an active Food Pantry. Initially it was an informal need-based system. Donated goods consisting of canned and dry goods donated by local residents and neighbors. The needy folks would ring the doorbell for food. Like the soup kitchen, it has grown over the years and, over the past twelve months provided food to an average of 219 persons a week. We now have a client list that is electronically stored. Clients come once a month to pick up grocery items for their families. In this way, we can assure that the needs of all are met. No one is ever turned away and everyone is welcomed. Funding for food and supplies for Feeding with T.L.C, Inc. comes from a variety of sources: The Food Bank for New York, New York City, New York State, various foundations, City Harvest, corporations, supermarkets, churches, a local bakery, and individuals. We intend to continue to meet the needs of the needy and hungry on our Island. We appreciate your interest in Feeding with T.L.C., Inc.
