Mission Statement

The purpose of the Friends of Theodore Roosevelt Island is to work in partnership with the National Park Service to protect and preserve the living memorial that honors the conservation legacy of former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, and to enhance the public’s use and enjoyment of the island as a natural park located within a major urban center. The organization's three strategic priority areas for 2015-17 are: park preservation, visitor experience and park awareness. The Friends of Theodore Roosevelt Island was established in 2015 and is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors. The organization is volunteer-led with no staff.

About This Cause

The Friends of Theodore Roosevelt Island was established as a 501c3 organization in 2015 by a group of passionate volunteers who were eager to support the National Park Service in its ongoing efforts to preserve and protect the unique presidential memorial that is Theodore Roosevelt Island. The organization and its members serve as the voice and active force for ensuring that the 88-acre living memorial situated in the Potomac River in Washington, DC remains the beautiful and serene natural urban setting that is symbolic of all the natural lands in America that Theodore Roosevelt loved and protected. The Friends of Theodore Roosevelt Island provides an extended volunteer workforce to assist the park staff bring increased public support to the park, including an awareness of park issues, conservation values and a strong sense of stewardship and involvement. The organization has three strategic priority areas for 2015-17: • Park Preservation activities ensure that the memorial plaza, trail system and woodland landscape remain a fitting tribute to President Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation legacy. Programs engage volunteers in invasive plant removal, trash cleanup and trail and landscape maintenance. • Visitor Experience activities engage local, nationwide and international visitors in educational programs about Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency and in interpretive programs about the natural and cultural resources that exist on Theodore Roosevelt Island. Recreational activities, such as bird walks, full moon walks and paddle boarding tours allow visitors to take advantage of the Island’s scenic landscape and the surrounding Potomac River. New visitor aids, including mobile applications, are under development. • Park Awareness activities allow individuals, groups, organizations and corporations to know and respect Theodore Roosevelt Island not only as a natural refuge in an urban center, but as a fitting memorial to honor the legacy of a president who was a passionate outdoorsman and conservationist. Partnerships with like-minded organizations leverage interest and support of Theodore Roosevelt Island activities, conservation issues and park needs. The Friends of Theodore Roosevelt Island is a volunteer-led organization governed by a nine-member Board of Directors and employs no staff. Theodore Roosevelt Island is a park unit of the George Washington Memorial Parkway within the National Park Service. Approximately 160,000 people visit Theodore Roosevelt Island each year.
