Mission Statement
Earthwin's mission is to educate and grow awareness of mindful living for global well-being. Every action we take changes the world... Let them be for good. We strive to empower children and adults by helping them realize their actions make a difference in the world. We believe increasing equity, diversity and inclusion is imperative to our advancement toward a more sustainable, healthy society.
About This Cause
Earthwin Eco-Club Challenge gives Central Oregon youth a platform to create meaningful projects that help improve their school and their community. We ask kids to answer three simple questions via video submissions: 1. What?: All of our choices, all of our actions could be called "EarthWin" or "EarthLose". What do you think this means and why is it important? 2. So What?: Because you're making this video, it seems like you care about choosing "EarthWin." Why does this matter to you? Why should it matter to others? 3. Now What?: How will your EarthWin Eco-Club have an impact for your school, your community and your planet? All submissions must be in by December 1, 2021. The Winner will receive $2500 ($1000 and $500 for 2nd and 3rd) to start their own school supervised and administered Earthwin Eco-Club or contribute to an already existing environmental club. Earthwin serves to protect our environment while generating scalable ecological and social impacts. Earthwin promotes student achievement with real world applications of STEM curriculum to address current and future global climate and social issues. Earthwin fosters educational excellence and imagination while ensuring equal access to help grow leaders. We are collaborating with OSU, The Environmental Center, Oregon Green Schools, and faculty and community leaders for the Earthwin Eco-club Challenge. We harness student’s natural enthusiasm to inspire support from friends, family and community leaders to create enriching contributions. Studies show student engagement and self confidence increase with real world learning opportunities as they realize they can make a difference. To be “Earthwin” - is your commitment to cultivating, awareness, kindness and sustainability, in your community and for our planet. The Benefits of educating young people about environmental health and sustainability: Inclusion: Inclusion in middle schools is natural. We help provide space for collaborative creativity to build a sense of equity, accomplishment, and empowerment. Eco-clubs create healthy connections around common goals, draw support from families and community leaders and help close the opportunity gap in our communities, including those who are disadvantaged or excluded due to poverty, race/ethnicity or geography. Sustainability, Respect and Health: Eco-clubs create empowering opportunities to engage students and adults in ecological sustainability to understand our natural resource economy. Our programming serves to protect our environment and health of society while generating scalable ecological and social impacts. Teaching the value of conservation helps students understand how their behavior affects their environment and people around them, making them more responsible and healthy adults. Critical Thinking: Studies show student engagement and self confidence dramatically increases with real world experiential learning opportunities. Engaging students in their middle school years is of critical importance to develop the understanding that they can positively affect change. Ecological education provides young people with the skills to think critically about the consequences of their actions. Safety and Responsibility: Incorporating an environmental health class in a school curriculum instructs students on how to be safe, responsible and mindful of their surroundings. People who have undergone wilderness safety training spend a significant amount of time learning safety skills and know-how to live responsibly. A Fun Break from the Classroom Routine: Environmental health education encourages young people to spend valuable time outside. EcoClub is a thought-provoking opportunity for teachers to incorporate demanding subjects such as biology, chemistry, sustainability, resource economy and many other topics into the curriculum. Imagine learning engineering, mathematics and science in a meadow or forest! Teaching people to actively participate in city or county level organizations can change their overall attitude about appreciating where they live. Boosts Awareness: Studying subjects related to the environment or ecosystems encourages awareness of global sustainability challenges. Some of the major areas of focus include learning about the species of various animals and plants and teaching children about the key components that support life on earth. Helping children understand what the world is currently facing will help enlighten them to maintain a sustainable environment. Helps Shape the Future Careers of Students: Science and math teachers are required to meet certain state requirements in their school districts. Ecological or environmental health education courses offer these teachers an opportunity to meet these requirements in a unique setting. Environmental education can form the basis of a sustainable future and enhance learning processes in school districts. “We are the first generation that can end poverty. We are also the last generation that can slow global warming before it is too late.” – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, 2015. #YouthStats: Environment and Climate Change ● Close to half a million youth around the world have taken action on climate change through SGP [small grants programmes] projects in their homes, schools and communities. [UNDP, Fast Facts: Youth and Climate Change, 2015, http://goo.gl/Luyn3P] ● By 2050, with a projected increased global population of 9.6 billion, we would need the equivalent of almost 3 planets worth of resources to sustain our way of living, if our current consumption and production patterns remain the same. [UNEP, 2011, http://bit.ly/1Niu2q7] ● 84% of the surveyed young people agree that they need more information to prevent climate change. [UNEP, 2011, http://bit.ly/1Niu2q7] ● About 73% of surveyed youth say they currently feel the effects climate change. [UNEP, GlobeScan Survey, 2008, http://bit.ly/1CtR3zZ] ● Some 89% of youth respondents say young people can make a difference on climate change. [UNEP, GlobeScan Survey, 2008, http://bit.ly/1CtR3zZ] ● Only 9% of youth are very confident the world will act quickly enough to address climate change. [UNEP, GlobeScan Survey, 2008, http://bit.ly/1CtR3zZ] ● Young people are key actors in raising awareness, running educational programmes, promoting sustainable lifestyles, conserving nature, supporting renewable energy, adopting environmentally-friendly practices and implementing adaptation and mitigation projects. [UNFCCC] ● Youth constitute the majority of the population in many countries and have an increasingly strong social and environmental awareness, which has the power to transform our societies towards a low-carbon and climate resilient future. [United Nations Joint Framework Initiative on Children, Youth and Climate Change, 2010, http://bit.ly/1FBQsfy] We believe meaningful change begins locally and student driven, community projects empower people to believe we can solve the issues we face, together.
