Mission Statement
The mission of Boston Music Project (BMP) is to ensure the long-term social-emotional and musical success of Boston youth.
About This Cause
The Boston Music Project (BMP) was born from the desire to bring daily, high-quality music education and social-emotional learning support to our city's most vulnerable youth. BMP initially began in partnership with Boston Public School (BPS) in 2011. In 2015, BMP acquired its official 501c3 nonprofit status, separating its budget and operations from BPS. Since achieving our 501c3 status, the organization has continued its steady growth, adding new programming yearly to meet growing demand. We are currently serving nearly 2,300 youth through fourteen different school partnerships. We employ a diverse team of 60 teaching artists as well as several collegiate teaching and administrative interns. Our programs are designed to advance youths’ musical abilities and to help them develop the executive function skills and social-emotional skills necessary to succeed at school and in life. We offer a range of in-school-time, outside-of-school-time and summer programming to PreK-12th grade students. Within our programs, students are divided by age and musical ability which allows us to challenge and support youth through all of their developmental stages. Programs include general music class, sequential instrumental instruction, digital-music composition, leadership development, special education music class, and much more. Within our programs, students are divided by age and musical ability which allows us to challenge and support youth through all of their developmental stages. Programs can vary in length from short intensive residencies to year-long programs (~35-weeks). As performance is a large part of our programming, we work to create opportunities for students to practice this skill. Students regularly perform and collaborate with other students, guest artists, and peers at other local non-profit arts organizations. Through our curriculum, we aim to provide Boston youth of all ages with an education that supports Musical Excellence, Social-Emotional Skill Development, Civic Engagement through Music-Making and Creative Self-Expression.
