Mission Statement

Bay Area Music Project (BAMP) is an El Sistema inspired after-school music education program serving the social, emotional, cultural and academic needs of underserved children. Our purpose is to provide an opportunity where all children—regardless of circumstances—can thrive socially and academically through music education that promotes creative expression, teamwork, discipline and social responsibility.

About This Cause

Every child deserves a complete education—one that very much includes music—in order to build a strong foundation for lifelong learning and personal growth. Pressure to improve math and reading scores have resulted in diminishing music education programs, even though studies prove music education helps students improve in those academic areas. When combined with extreme cuts in public education funding, our schools are now left with basic, often outdated music programs, devoid of proper resources and support. High-quality, inclusive music programs are paramount to the social and psychological well-being of a child and by extension, their community. For children of low-income families and/or English language learners, the absence of art, and especially music, deprives them of learning skills such as creativity, problem-solving, focus, and collaboration necessary to academic and lifelong success. Here in the Bay Area access to music instruction, instruments and after-school care can be a great financial hardship for many families. To alleviate these barriers, Bay Area Music Project (BAMP) provides access to high-quality music education, instruments, academic support, nutritious snacks, as well as performance and mentorship opportunities to children who need it most. We believe providing children with musical instruction and performance in a collaborative atmosphere builds confidence, compassion, tolerance, and patience. These are skills that transfer to their academic success and are particularly vital for children who don't receive the same level of support in their day-to-day home lives. BAMP is having a significant, positive impact on the lives of children and families in the Alameda community, where it primarily serves Maya Lin School. In just under four years, BAMP has grown from serving 40 children, two days per week, to reaching 160 kids every weekday after school until 6:00pm, 50% of whom qualify for need-based scholarships. All told, since its founding, BAMP has enriched and transformed the lives of over 400 children through the power of music, and has ambitions to reach many more. We offer the following transformative music making, mentoring and academic achievement experiences for students: • Individual and group instruction in violin, cello, winds, brass, percussion and voice • Ensemble instruction and performance • Electronic music production • Academic support and targeted tutoring • Field trips (Oakland Symphony, Marin Symphony, SF Conservatory of Music, Cal Performances) • Guest artist performances and side by side rehearsals • Performance opportunities in school, our community and throughout the Bay Area This year, we have added special programming for kindergarteners that includes singing, bucket band and music appreciation. By providing the opportunity and access to quality, inspirational music education, we are creating an environment where a child’s potential to thrive academically and socially is limitless.
