Mission Statement
Desi Dance Network was officially founded in 2014 to foster a community amongst artists engaged in competitive South Asian dance. Since the inception of the organization, Desi Dance Network has grown to include not only dancers, but all performance artists from multiple genres of South Asian performance arts (including DJs, producers, filmmakers, etc.). Desi Dance Network was founded on the principle of community building and re-empowering the South Asian community by reconnecting multigenerational South Asian dancers to their roots. Desi Dance Network co-hosts and sponsors various national events ranging from dance competitions to conventions and forums.
About This Cause
Through intersection of performances, arts education, and civic engagement, Desi Dance Network exists to empower South Asian artists by creating and developing safe spaces for artistic and creative growth. In providing local and national access to workshops, conventions, and competitions, Desi Dance Network seeks to combat cultural erasure and challenge mainstream notions of identity by promoting alternative narratives through Desi (South Asian) dance, music, and arts. South Asian performing arts include, but are not limited to, Bollywood and folk dances, Carnatic and Hindustani music and recitals, and creative film projects that incorporate music and dance. The mission of Desi Dance Network is to play a leadership role in the performance arts ecology of the Bay Area and throughout the United States by providing access to regular workshops, classes, and performances. Furthermore, Desi Dance Network also attempts to spread South Asian performing arts by hosting national competitions and showcases. Objectives and goals of the Desi Dance Network Mission: -To serve youth and young adults (ages 16-25) interested in South Asian performing arts regardless of socioeconomic status -To reflect the diversity of the local communities in all programming -To facilitate conversations of social issues, health, and personal narrative through performing arts -To provide a vehicle for storytelling and personal growth for youth and young adults through performing arts -To build a network of artists and other professionals (interested in arts) We believe there is an artist in everyone. We believe in liberating the artist.
