OTHER SIDE ACADEMY

Salt Lake City, Utah, 84102 United States

Mission Statement

We save lives by changing behaviors. We believe that human beings are fundamentally good, even though behavior may be “bad.” The inborn goodness of human beings is susceptible to corruption through experience and faulty learning; conversely, good behavior can be achieved through experience and relearning. This view of human nature encourages students to pursue their full potential. It allows them to forgive themselves for past errors, as well as the past errors of others.

About This Cause

The Other Side includes three entities; The Other Side Academy SLC, The Other Side Academy Denver, and The Other Side Village (also located in SLC). Each operates independently of one another, keeping their donations, revenue, and expenses separate. The Other Side Academy is a 501(c)(3) public non-profit organization located in Salt Lake City, Utah and Denver, Colorado where criminals, homeless, and substance abusers can change their lives, free of charge. Our comprehensive 2 1/2 year residential program offers vocational training, education, peer counseling and mentoring, leadership training and transitional services. We are not a “re-hab” in the traditional sense nor are we in any way a residential treatment facility. Our emphasis is not on drugs or alcohol. Rather, we focus on behavior and on learning how to live a life of honesty, empathy, and accountability. We are a peer community for learning life skills. Participants in the Academy programs are called “students” and they represent our society’s most serious social problems—and yet, remarkably, as a group they provide solutions to one another’s challenges. We do not have doctors, clinical therapists, or counselors at The Other Side Academies. Instead, there is no distinction in the backgrounds of leaders and students other than more time and experience living in the Academy communities and influencing others to change their lives. All have been in and out of jail or prison repeatedly and ultimately, left hopeless for a decent life. Faculty members are living examples of the efficacy of the program having done everything new students are asked to do. Their lived experience gives immediate credibility to the behavior change they lead, teach, and require of our student population. The Other Side Village, our newest therapeutic community, began in 2021 and comprises two parts; The Village Prep School and The Other Side Village neighborhood, a 430 small home master planned community. Both represent an innovative approach to alleviating chronic homelessness and are created under the Academy's 501(c)(3). The mission of the Village is to permanently change the lives of Utah's chronically homeless by creating communities of healing and purposeful living. The Village is Utah’s most innovative response to chronic homelessness, offering a permanent, relationship-based, and self-sustaining housing solution. Unlike traditional shelter systems or transitional housing, the Village is designed to break the cycle of homelessness at its root, providing deeply affordable, permanent homes within a structured community where individuals can rebuild their lives. Unlike traditional government-subsidized models, The Other Side Village: - Provides permanent housing with structured community support—residents take personal responsibility and contribute to the Village. - Focuses on long-term self-sufficiency through work opportunities and personal development, breaking the cycle of dependence. - Operates a self-sustaining model within three years of completion, will reduce reliance on public funds. - Creates accountability and performance measures to ensure lasting success for residents. Village success is based on residents remaining sober, independent living, and housed.
