Mission Statement
Our Voice Nuestra Voice is a nation-building organization, anchoring ancestry while building Black and Brown solidarity in New Orleans. We build the capacity of community members, parents, and families to act as advocates in order to create a city where Black and brown people can thrive, focusing on a number of issues including education, criminal justice, and immigration.
About This Cause
We envision a world where Black and brown people live without systemic harm, and practice liberatory education and restorative justice. We utilize the following three tactics that complement and enhance one another. By attacking the issue from all directions, we can create sustainable change for Black and brown communities in New Orleans. 1) We work within the system to amplify the voices of Black and brown people through partnerships with other organizations to build their capacity to serve our community. 2) We work against the system by organizing communities to challenge systems and create institutional change. 3) We work without the system to create space for community and cultural remembering and to create new ways of being for our people. Recent wins include: - Organized New Orleans cafeteria workers and won them the very first living wage campaign in the South. - Organized around and successfully made Indigenous People's Day a city holiday. - Through our Community Defense Fund we distributed over $320,000 in direct funds to folks that were left out of government solutions during COVID and Hurricane Ida. - Organized parents and passed a district policy that protects parents' right to organize and prevents retaliation. - Led parents in conducting research and interviewing schools to release the very first (and still only) city-wide report and evaluation of EL services in schools. - Passed a statewide law requiring failing schools to make presentations to parents and the community about their plans to improve. - Lobbied LDOE and the governor's office in order to eliminate the social security requirement for obtaining P-EBT funds. We then hosted trainings for families in New Orleans, unlocking over $2.5M to these families. - Took 20 Black leaders in philanthropy, advocacy, and arts to the San Diego/Tijuana border to learn first hand the experiences of Black migrants and bring their stories back to the community. - For three years we have brought over 300 Black and Brown people together to build coalition and power in New Orleans with our yearly Black & Brown Get Down. At the event participants engage in conversation around issues which guide our yearly priorities. At our 2020 event, we launched our Community Defense Fund which enabled the emergency relief mentioned above.
