Mission Statement
The Commodore John Barry Arts and Culture Center is a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization whose mission is to sponsor and support programs and activities in the Delaware Valley (includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware) that teach, celebrate and promote Irish art, culture and rich heritage. It is the Center’s goal that Irish Seniors, Irish Immigrants, Veterans, first-generation descendants of Irish Immigrants, and Irish-Americans will all benefit from its programs. To aid in accomplishing its mission, the Arts and Culture Center purchased the property, commonly known as the “Irish Center” at 6815 Emlen Street, Philadelphia, PA on October 25, 2017. The Center provides a common location where a variety of Irish organizations can meet and socialize at minimum or no cost. This includes celli groups, Irish societies, AOH divisions, dance groups, dance schools, GAA clubs, Senior Citizen groups, and others. It also houses an extensive library and a diverse collection of Irish memorabilia that is on display for all to appreciate. The Irish Center is focused on broadening the use of its facility and programs by multiple generations, including younger generations, families with young children, teenagers, young adults and seniors. The Irish Center would also like to broaden the facility usage by community representatives- outreach to the Mt Airy community has always been and continues to be a high priority for the Irish Center.
About This Cause
The Commodore John Barry Arts & Cultural Center was formed in 2014 as a 501(C)(3) charitable organization, to be a vibrant resource in the Philadelphia and surrounding area that would teach, celebrate and promote Irish art, culture and heritage. In 2017, we purchased the building fondly known as the Irish Center at 6815 Emlen Street in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia to aid in that mission. The Irish Center has been part of the Mount Airy community for over 50 years. As a true Arts & Cultural center we can now continue the many programs which include: maintaining a library rich in Irish books and artifacts, teaching Irish dance and language, encouraging our youth to learn traditional Irish music, hosting bagpipe classes, senior activities, and relevant speakers programs, to name just a few. Additionally, we provide essential space for a wide array of other cultural and community organizations in the neighborhood.
