About This Cause
Open Dance Project is an ensemble-driven dance theater company dedicated to developing and presenting world-class performances in Houston and serving as a cultural resource through engaging and enriching education and community programming. Founded in 2015 by arts integration specialist and nationally recognized choreographer Annie Arnoult, Open Dance Project has quickly become one of Houston’s most respected dance companies. At our core, we believe in collaborative community; we believe every human being benefits from engagement in the arts; we believe that participating in a creative process empowers individuals and strengthens communities; and we believe that everyone in Houston should have access to the arts. With education programming accounting for 50% of its $450K budget ODP has impacted more than 8000 students and teachers from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, mixed abilities, and ages in over 850 contact hours of integrated arts residencies, dance classes, workshops, and teacher trainings in Houston studios, schools, parks, and hospitals. ODP’s classroom residencies and professional development workshops for teachers have helped to ensure that students in underserved communities in Houston have greater access to the arts, and, through that access, a statistically better chance at success in life as defined by data driven research. ODP has offered multi-year residencies at Wharton Academy, Field Elementary, Hogg Middle and KIPP Houston among others. Open Dance Project has served as a significant contributor to arts equity in Houston through its ongoing partnerships with Young Audiences of Houston and Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Roster and its new partnerships with Arts Connect and Hobby Center’s Discovery Series. Since its inception, the company has produced 29 world premieres at venues including The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, MATCH, The Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston and The Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University - and received praise for the boundary breaking nature of its work from Dance Magazine, The Houston Chronicle, Arts & Culture TX, and The Houston Press. In addition to creating annual dance theater immersive and family productions, ODP has participated in MATCH’s Family Fun Day, the Miller Series, and Dance Houston. The organization is supported in part by the City of Houston and the Houston Arts Alliance, Strake Foundation, The Brown Foundation, The Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts, National Performance Network, Greater Houston Community Foundation, Felvis Foundation, and the Nelson Family Foundation and has received commissions and co-production support from DiverseWorks, Studio5 Performing Arts Center, Dance Houston, The Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University, Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center, the Israeli Consulate, and Young Audiences of Houston.
