About This Cause

1951 Coffee is a non-profit specialty coffee organization seeking to promote the well-being of the refugee community in the San Francisco Bay Area by providing job training and employment to refugees and asylees while educating the surrounding community about refugee life and issues. In 1951 the United Nations first defined and set forth guidelines for the protection of refugees. These protections were further expanded in the 1967 Protocols giving the UNHCR a global mandate. 1951 Coffee Company was founded in 2015 in the spirit of these conventions to give refugees being resettled in the San Francisco Bay Area assistance in starting their new lives through training and employment in the rapidly expanding coffee industry. 1951 Coffee supports the refugee community by offering a Barista Training Program in Oakland and San Diego California, as well as employment matching assistance with local cafes following the training program. Additionally, 10-15 graduates of the training program are offered employment annually at the 1951 Coffee Shop, located in Berkeley, CA. The 1951 Coffee Shop is a convergence point for refugees and the larger resettlement community. It is a place to share life — stories from the past and hopes for the future — over a well crafted cup of coffee. We welcome you to support our mission by visiting our specialty coffee shop at 2410 Channing Way Berkeley, CA 94704. Thank you for your support!
