Joy Of Reading is a volunteer driven organization working towards kindling the joy of reading books amongst young children in India. Learn to Read, Read to Learn, Read for Joy!
About This Cause
Joy of Reading is a non-profit trust providing books and literacy training to underserved schools and libraries in India. Our vision is to spread the pleasure of reading by increasing book access and establishing and supporting libraries. We train instructors to implement Joy of Reading Hour programs and to provide structured assessments measuring reading progress. Since 2010, we have partnered with over 20 organizations and distributed over 10,000 books. Our volunteers sort and label gently used books to determine reading levels. We then work with existing programs to distribute books. Our partners in India include India Literacy Project, Saraswati Vidya Peetam which runs Bala Sishu mandir schools, Hippocampus, ITeach Pune, Teach for India, and SEEDS. We recently partnered with Karnataka state government to provide books for one of the state run homes to establish a library. In India, we operate in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. In Nepal, we operate through our partner organization TRIFC to run libraries in schools where students are Hearing Impaired.
