Mission Statement
At Ascutney Outdoors, our mission is to connect members of our community through outdoor recreational activities and events. These activities promote health and wellness, foster wholesome and active childhood development, and strengthen our community through shared experiences and vitality. We strive to make our programs affordable and inclusive. We are stewards of over 1,500 acres of conserved land owned by the Town of West Windsor. Community members and visitors enjoy public access to trails, forests and fields for walking and hiking, mountain biking, trail running, alpine skiing and snow tubing, and back-country skiing and snowshoeing. The Ascutney Outdoors Center is the gathering place for all of our activities and events, both large and small. It offers diverse programs for the community, educational groups, and cultural programs.
About This Cause
When the local Ascutney Ski Area closed for good in 2010, the Town of West Windsor struggled with a decline in economic and social vitality. The Town and newly formed non-profit, Ascutney Outdoors (AO) led a plan to bring back well-being and activity. In 2015, the Town took the first step with the acquisition of 470 acres that comprised the former ski area. This land was combined with the existing Town Forest to create a 1,581-acre parcel that was placed in a conservation and recreation easement conveyed to the Upper Valley Land Trust. Ascutney Outdoors, a 501(c)(3), took on responsibility for the management, oversight, and development of recreational, educational, and community activities on this land. Since then, local residents and others throughout the region have worked together with Ascutney Outdoors to create a diverse outdoor recreational area which offers downhill and backcountry skiing, tubing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, and hiking, as well as a community gathering place for recreational, educational and other events for all ages. A rope tow, T-bar and tubing lift were installed along with the construction of the new Ascutney Outdoors Center. This was accomplished through donations, fundraising events, volunteer labor and materials, and grants. We completed our capital plan and infrastructure last year.
