About This Cause
The Institute for Sport and Social Justice (The Institute) has been delivering cutting-edge diversity and inclusion, gender violence prevention, and leadership training services since its inception in the mid-eighties. The Institute conducts training designed on best practices developed over three decades of delivering training, technical assistance, and policy development focused on leadership, diversity and inclusion and preventing gender violence. From locker rooms to sport executive suites, we have learned many lessons and developed best practices for effectively addressing the full continuum of diversity and inclusion issues and empowering participants to understand how unconscious bias, gender discrimination and micro-aggressions can create an environment that feels unwelcome for some individuals. Our experience informs us that, notwithstanding some incremental progress in sports culture, additional innovation is needed to help a sports world that is struggling to gain any real traction in dealing with diversity and inclusion. Simply put, more needs to be done than what has been done in this field to date. We’ve learned that conversations need to go deeper to shift attitudes and behaviors, and to have lasting impact on organizational culture. We’ve learned that tailored curriculum and trainings are needed for different groups -- surgical strategies to most effectively engage and transform participants. We’ve learned that everyone must be involved in training discussions about these issues. We’ve learned that we, as a culture, need to re-think how learning is defined. Finally, we’ve learned how to make impact in sport organizations, to actually move the needle. To move the needle on these issues, there needs to be multiple training experience touchpoints per year, and they need to be experienced in an engaging and stimulating format. Here are some key aspects of the Institute for Sport and Social Justice that make it unique: Our Experience: The Institute has the demonstrated organizational capacity to execute large training agreements and our trainers have extensive experience working to address myriad social issues, including diversity and inclusion, in sport. Among the groups we’ve impacted include all of the major US professional sports leagues; over 200 college athletic departments including conference-wide training partnerships with the SEC, Big 10, & A-10; over 150 high schools; all branches of the US Military, and the Australian Army. The Institute has unparalleled experience in working with the most difficult-to-reach groups, and we are an industry leader – having developed a deep understanding of social change work through thousands of training sessions. Our Huddle: The Institute trainers are a diverse team of former athletes who have an insider’s understanding of sport culture combined with over three decades of lessons learned on the most impactful strategies to address social issues. Our trainers have the unique ability to establish connections, gain the attention & trust of athletes, coaches & staff, and create “safe space” for participants to learn from one another. This is our work. Active Learning: The Institute trainings are driven by active learning strategies that maximize interactive dialogue and enhance participant learning. Our trainings create a buzz and have impact. These dynamic training sessions utilize original training materials.
