About This Cause

Power is Giving is a community-rooted nonprofit dedicated to dismantling systemic health inequities by delivering culturally resonant, evidence-based whole food, plant-based (WFPB) lifestyle education. We serve youth and adults in systemically marginalized communities—particularly Black and Brown families—who are disproportionately impacted by lifestyle-driven chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. These are not just conditions—they are preventable, arrestable, and reversible realities that continue to devastate families in communities historically denied access to the very solutions that could save their lives. At Power is Giving, we do not present disease management strategies. We focus exclusively on prevention, arrest, and reversal—planting seeds for intergenerational wellness and expanding access to transformative, life-saving interventions through community-centered, free programming that restores autonomy, dignity, and hope. Our Programs We operate a year-round continuum of programs under our Eat Drink Disrupt (EDD) initiative, all offered free of charge to the public and designed specifically to remove the financial, cultural, and systemic barriers that often block access to wellness. EDD Talks Lunch & Learn A 75-minute, culturally resonant clinical and culinary-led WFPB lifestyle education and optimal wellness equity program conducted 5–6 times annually. These sessions are led by physicians and paired with expert nutrition support and a nutrient-rich, whole food, plant-based lunch. Each program focuses on the prevention, arrest, and reversal of a specific chronic condition, and includes open Q&A and evidence unpacking for participants. EDD Fit & Fuel Tennis Program A half-day youth wellness equity program led by former, culturally aligned and elite NCAA Division 1 tennis athletes. This program combines tennis and fitness instruction with whole food, plant-based meals and practical health education tailored for children and teens from historically underserved communities. It addresses youth wellness, obesity prevention, and family engagement through culturally relevant, fun, and evidence-based interventions. EDD Summit A flagship, half-day wellness equity program held annually. The EDD Summit brings together culturally resonant physicians, financial strategists, and lifestyle experts to present evidence-based solutions that address the root causes of chronic disease. The program features WFPB tasting stations, community vendor showcases, and support for small businesses owned by members of systemically disenfranchised communities—offering them free vendor space and exposure. With a “reach, teach, and taste” model, the Summit is not only educational, but immersive and actionable. Our Model What makes Power is Giving different is both who we serve and how we serve. All of our programming is designed and delivered by professionals—including physicians, chefs, former athletes, and educators—who reflect the lived experiences of the communities we reach. This cultural resonance builds trust, deepens impact, and makes our wellness equity model scalable and sustainable. We don’t manage disease—we restore wellness. Our approach is not extractive. It’s restorative. We respect the intelligence of the communities we serve by providing evidence-based solutions that empower people to take charge of their own health journey—regardless of income, zip code, or medical history. Our Impact Power is Giving directly serves thousands of individuals annually in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. We focus specifically on communities where chronic illness rates are highest and nutrition access is lowest. In Mecklenburg County alone: African Americans are three times more likely to die from diabetes than their white counterparts. 30% of children under age five are overweight or obese. Studies show that by age 10, most children already have fatty streaks in their arteries—the first sign of atherosclerosis. Systemic inequities in food access, healthcare, and wellness education remain deeply entrenched. Our programs work to reverse these outcomes by addressing the root causes, not just the symptoms. Why We Matter Power is Giving fills a critical gap in our community. We provide access to interventions that are often reserved for those with wealth, private healthcare, or specialized education. We’re not a trend—we are a response to a generational crisis. We’re not pushing a product—we’re restoring access to health as a human right. By supporting Power is Giving, you are investing in community-led solutions that are: Culturally relevant Evidence-based Free to participants Designed to disrupt cycles of chronic illness Rooted in equity and long-term transformation We’re proud to collaborate with physicians, national organizations like the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), local churches, schools, and community networks like Share Charlotte and United Way of Greater Charlotte (UWGC) to ensure that our work strengthens—not duplicates—the ecosystem of support. Together, we can reverse the outcomes our communities have long been told are inevitable.
