Mission Statement
GenPride advocates for Seattle/King County older LGBTQIA+ adults' unique needs through programs and services that cultivate well-being and belonging.
About This Cause
LGBTQIA+ seniors face a unique set of challenges and health disparities as they age: compared to their peers, they are more likely to experience social isolation, be in poverty, are at higher risk for illness, are less likely to have the support of children or biological family, and often face discrimination and difficulty finding culturally sensitive care. Due to surviving the AIDS epidemic of the 1980’s/ 90’s, many rainbow elders today never thought they’d live to an advanced age. Despite this, or perhaps because of this, they have an incredibly unique perspective on life, and deep gratitude for care, love, and acceptance. The Aging with Pride report that led to GenPride’s inception eight years ago has been jarringly substantiated by the rainbow elders applying for housing at Pride Place: we are learning how deeply our elders are struggling to survive, feel safe, and belong. To have a place where rainbow elders can be authentic and feel welcomed and safe is desperately needed and a huge gap in our City. Since GenPride’s inception, we have been focused on directly addressing the needs of the King County’s rainbow elders, addressing social isolation and health inequities. We envision a future where all rainbow elders throughout King County feel safe, and are leading meaningful lives. The GenPride Center will be the first of its kind, and will expand our capacity to advocate for the unique needs of rainbow elders, continue delivering programs that promote wellbeing and prevent social isolation, and cultivate a true sense of belonging through community connection. The Center will ensure more rainbow elders in King County who face multiple systemic inequities have access to affordable housing, meals, health and social work services, senior-centered social engagement and fitness activities, and assistance accessing other community-based services that support a higher quality of life.
