Mission Statement
Hebron VA, Inc. (Hebron) is a non-profit organization which is based in Petersburg, Virginia. Hebron’s mission is to educate underserved females about etiquette and self-love, regardless of socio-economic status and ethnicity. Hebron specializes in females to reduce the vulnerability to academic failure, school expulsions, suspensions, crime, teen pregnancy, drop-out rate, and juvenile justice involvement. Like many inner cities around the country, the State of Virginia has increased gun violence. In 2020, the homicide rate increased 23.4%. According to the 2020 study conducted by Virginia State Police, victims and offenders tended to be younger males at a rate of 45.1% aged 18 to 34 years old. State data sources have found that an average of 96 children and teens die by guns every year. Fifty-six percent of all gun deaths among Virginia youth result from homicide. Minorities, specifically African American males, have higher rates of death by gun violence and overdose than any other population. According to Javdani et al (2014 - Gender Differences in the Effects of Community Violence on Mental Health Outcomes in a Sample of Low-Income Youth Receiving Psychiatric Care), girls who experience community violence around people they know are at greater risk for Externalizing, Internalizing, and PTSD symptoms. This insight has obligated Hebron to expand the supports we provide to the female youth to include young males in our programs when school is not in session. This strategy was developed to holistically support the young ladies in the community.
