Mission Statement

Starkey, Inc. was founded in 1930 by Hattie Starkey, a retired teacher who believed all children, no matter their disability, could learn. From that humble beginning around her kitchen table with two students, Starkey now supports over 520 men, women and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, concurrent physical disabilities, and mental health concerns. Starkey supports include assistance with employment, multiple community living options, life enrichment, case management, and programs for those who struggle with autism and behavior challenges. While Starkey is proud of the services it currently offers, it also believes it must continually advocate for those whose voices may be limited but whose potential is full of possibility and promise.

About This Cause

Starkey, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. For the past 85 years, Starkey has worked to develop the potential of individuals through a variety of programs designed to support their needs, their personal desires, and their capabilities. These programs are currently in place: Case Management Case managers work with 350 individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD), their families and their guardians to coordinate services which will best serve and support the personal goals, interests and needs of the person with a disability. Employment Starkey provides opportunities through the Work Activity program for over 200 individuals to do contract work at the main facility at 4500 West Maple, Wichita. Starkey also provides training so that multiple individuals with Intellectual and developmental disabilities can and do work for local area businesses. Community Living The community living program serves 247 individuals who live in 43 Starkey homes and two Starkey apartment complexes. Each home offers staff support for everyday tasks such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, recreation and group activities. Homes and staffing are designed to support the variety of needs, from weekly check-ins and assistance with meal planning and grocery shopping, to those who have have high medical needs, and to those who may have both intellectual disabilities and dementia. Gateway (Challenging Behaviors Program) This program offers individualized support to 17 adults (full-time) and one adult (part-time) with I/DD and challenging behaviors and/or mental illness and/or autism. Staff works to support appropriate behavior and personal development in a variety of center and community-based activities. Life Enrichment One hundred twenty-two adults with I/DD and concurrent physical disabilities and higher support needs study basic living skills, education units, enjoy leisure time, volunteer with Meals on Wheels and other organizations, and travel to a variety of community attractions under the auspices of the broad-based Life Enrichment program. Starkey has an extensive transportation program which facilitates community integration opportunities, ranging from attending church, grocery shopping, visiting with friends, attending concerts and dances. Transportation is also offered to those who need rides to medical appointments. Starkey is governed by an active and engaged Board of Directors. It has a financial audit every year. Starkey is financially supported through Medicare but the remuneration received has not been increased in eight years. Growth and expansion of needs is ever present. While gaps in funding are partially filled by very careful financial management, more is asked of Starkey every year. Charitable donations are vital to help bridge the gaps in funding and to assist with the increasing needs and complexities of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
