Mission Statement

To promote independence for persons with disabilities through innovative learning experiences that support individuals' choices for working, living, and playing in their community.

About This Cause

KETCH, located in the heart of Wichita, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is dedicated to serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In 1962, a group of parents of adults with disabilities gathered because they believed in the abilities of their children and wanted to see a program that would teach and train actual job skills. In 1964, the Kansas Elks Association adopted this organization and provided leadership through the Board of Directors naming it the Kansas Elks Training Center for the Handicapped (KETCH). KETCH grew over the years to include residential settings with a wider range of skills training, to what we have today that includes programs specifically designed around individual needs (i.e. persons with autism, elderly, medically fragile, as well as persons who are vocationally focused and desire to learn work skills). KETCH receives funding through Home and Community Based Services (HCBS), state and county funds, and private fees. This funding historically fluctuates, while state and county guidelines continue to hold high expectations and requirements. Thus, all funding is directed to costs associated with program and service provision for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, which also includes transportation, nursing, and case management services. This leaves very little to support the infrastructure required for services such as: replacement of heating and air units, upgrade of equipment and furniture, resurface parking lot, replace vehicles, etc. KETCH has remained steadfast over the years, firm in the belief in the fundamental rights of persons served, to teach and train work and home skills on a daily basis so that persons served may increase their personal level of independence. Services are provided for over 300 adults with disabilities each day. Lives that were limited or isolated are enhanced, provided with new direction, and given hope through programs dedicated to meeting the needs of each person to set and reach their goals through work, home, personal, social, and community activities.
