Mission Statement

KidsTLC's mission is to transform the lives of children and youth facing mental and behavioral health challenges, developmental trauma, and autism.

About This Cause

KidsTLC provides an array of community-based safety net services, giving families access to vital behavioral health services for themselves and their children/foster children. KidsTLC’s lives out our mission by providing a continuum of care that brings hope and healing to young lives through innovative and proven therapies in residential and outpatient programs. KidsTLC’s mission allows the agency to continue responding to the growing needs of children in the Kansas City Metro area by constantly adapting and adjusting services that fill community gaps and alleviate wait times for families to receive care. Programs help children heal on all levels through innovative therapeutic treatment philosophies; expressive therapies such as art, play and music therapy; and through a wealth of opportunities to improve the physical health of clients. Delivered through trauma-focused and evidence-based programming, each of our residential and outpatient programs offer an integrated, seamless service delivery model that allows youth/families to step up or down in the level of care, depending on their unique needs. KidsTLC houses the following programs that served 1,898 unique youth and families in 2022: 1) KidsTLC's Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) program serves children and youth ages six to 18 who were victims of intense traumatic experiences, such as abuse, neglect, and/or family disruption and are diagnosed with one or more mental illnesses. The core mission of the PRTF program is to create healthy, corrective relational experiences in a safe, less populated 24/7 residential environment providing individual/group/family therapy, art/pet/music therapy, recreational therapy, substance use treatment, and chaplaincy services. The intent is to recreate the dynamics that occur in healthy family situations. The program offers restorative, nurturing experiences to improve the relational abilities of these children and reduce the harmful impact of numerous traumatic experiences. KidsTLC recently added 50 beds to the program through the purchase of a new building in 2020, taking its capacity from 61 to 111 beds. KidsTLC’s residential facilities have a full-service cafeteria, therapeutic offices/spaces, indoor recreation space, and an outdoor playground. Children in the PRTF program attend school at the Claire Learning Center owned by Olathe Public Schools while therapy continues throughout the day. 2) KidsTLC Lotus Clinic. The purpose of the Lotus Clinic is to keep families together and prevent out-of-home care. The Lotus Clinic offers specialized outpatient behavioral health care to positively increase overall functioning across multiple settings in home, school, and community. The clinic has multiple specialty areas, including anxiety and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, in-home therapy, psychiatric medication management, general outpatient therapy, and an LGBTQ+ Gender Affirming Care clinic. The Lotus clinic also offers an evening Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that serves youth who have symptoms requiring more intensive treatment than traditional outpatient services, but who do not meet the criteria of inpatient PRTF. The focus of this program is to improve relational abilities that will improve family, school, and community life. The format focuses on group activities and skills but includes individual support for the child as well as family therapy and parenting education and support groups. 3) The Thriving Families Program works out of the administrative office and serves as the family support arm of the agency. Thriving Families includes two parent support groups: CARES and Que Onda Familias. The CARES program is designed to offer families who have a child in KidsTLC’s services with education and support and provide networking and support systems through shared peer partnerships. Que Onda Familias provides online education groups delivered in Spanish. The classes introduce basic parenting skill to help build safe, healthy, and strong relationships. The sessions offer information on community resources and services provided by KidsTLC for the Spanish speaking community. KidsTLC employs a bi-lingual health navigator who is available to the Hispanic community as well as to current and waitlisted KidsTLC clients. The navigator’s role is to assist families with community and health related referrals and support in finding mental health care, daily living support, and navigating the complexities of benefits enrollment/reimbursement. 4) Finally, the Kelly Family Wellness Center houses a state-of-the-art gymnasium along with two floors dedicated to the Trellis Center: autism services program, which provides applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy to children between 18 months and 14 years of age. The center offers a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team assessment as well as single specialization assessments to identify each child’s needs in the areas of social behavior, language and communication, fine and gross motor functioning, sensory needs, and academic and adaptive functioning.
