Sunflower House Mission Statement To protect children in our community from physical and sexual abuse through education, advocacy, forensic and medical services. Sunflower House Sunflower House is a non-residential child advocacy center serving Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas. Founded in 1977, it is a non-profit, United Way agency and is accredited by the National Children’s Alliance. Accreditation through this national affiliate ensures adherence to best practice standards of its federally recognized multidisciplinary approach to child abuse investigations. Sunflower House works to prevent child abuse and neglect through its education services, child assessment and medical services and public awareness programs. Its approach involves children, parents, professionals and the community in its efforts. Each year, approximately 500 abused children and their families in Johnson and Wyandotte Counties rely on Sunflower House to provide a safe and child-friendly environment to share the details of their abuse with investigators. Our training facility also allows us to train more than 5,000 adults annually about their rights and responsibilities as mandated reporters of abuse. Participants such as early childhood educators learn to recognize and report child abuse to the appropriate authorities, while they see first-hand how the system will respond to those reports. The cornerstone of our work, however, continues to remain in the area of child abuse prevention. We annually train more than 21,000 children in approximately 200 schools and early childhood centers, teaching kids the difference between welcome and unwelcome touch, how to report inappropriate touching, and that abuse is never the fault of the child.
